Anyone know this car?

  Clio 182
Hi all I'm looking to buy a 182.
Iv just test drove this one. It's not bad but does have a couple of issues. The main one being the front drivers side shock seems to poke through the turret at the top like it's not fixed correctly. What would cause this and is it easily fixed?
Here is the advert.

He has a receipt for cam belt but is only on a bit of paper from 47k in 2011. When I asked about the dephaser they didn't have a clue what I was talking about.
Thoughts?

take into account cost of all belts, pulleys dephasers etc if you buy

and the turrets sitting high is a common fault with clios afaik, is it both sides and how bad?

Not sure its just a notepad sheet with a local garage stamp on it. It is quiet enough sounds fine and smooth. Does tick over a tiny bit lumpy but that may be because its ticking over a little low?

Its just the drivers side but it creaks on full lock due to the metal part of the strut rubbing on the edge of the turret hole.

It would be worth you becoming a member on here and picking up a good clean one in the for sale section .

Better off getting a specialist to do the belts mate, too many horror stories of local garages doing timing and the engine dying shortly after

Lumpy Idle could also be timing, any lights on?

sounds like the top mount on that side might be knackered

It was done 3 years ago. No lights on at all. I'll assume is has the cup pack with the spoiler and darker wheels?
the top mounts are they a hard job? How is the top of the strut fixed?

Why would they know about a dephaser? Only on 47k, or have I missed something?

Not hard mate. Top of the strut is secured by the nut on the top of the strut and the upper mount. You can whiz it off with a windy gun or a swan necked spanner and allen key. then IIRC it's the other two bolts on the turret.

The top mount might be knackered, but there's a common 'clunk' on them as standard and the Renault fix was to put a spacer on to make it sit higher. IIRC new Renault top mounts come with this spacer, so it's worth checking to see if it's a replacement and only one sides been done.

I ended up buying this car he fixed the suspension top mount and car drives lovely. Mint inside with only a couple of minor marks on bodywork.
Iv polished the headlights to get rid of the nasty yellow fade. It has a cat back scorpion ss exhaust. Apart from the hesitation iv found when it comes on cam just after 5k its a good clean car.
Iv changed spark plugs and will do HT leads tomorrow to see if the hesitation is cured.

Just out of interest when is this usually changed?
Seems to be changed as one go with the cam belt.
Mine was not. Its had cam belt but the dephaser is quiet so ill get both done in a couple of years if iv still got the car. Anyone want to see the headlights iv polished?

It seems to have become popular to do it with the cam belt early on in the cars life for some reason on here because the cam belt has to be off to do it. Whilst that's all well and good, it's just more expense to me, possibly unecessary. As a precaution I can understand it, but for instance with my car it had a cam belt and aux belt fitted at 5 years (around 37k), has recently had an Aux belt fitted with an Alternator and will be due a Cam belt kit (and hence a Aux belt kit also) next April again, which will probably be around 62k. Seeing as I've know mines history and changed the oil and filters at 6k or less over the past six years (apparently regular oil changes are a big factor in the health of the dephaser) then unless there's dephaser noise on start up I wont change it, as I don't feel it's necessary. I could come acropper and the dephaser fails afterwards, but I feels there's too much b****cks on here with what are now at least nine year old cars.

Not sure what Renault reccommend or even if they reccommend changing the depahser as part of a service at all, though their mileage for a cam belt change is ott anyway.

Fair play mate I would say people are slightly paranoid on here lol. What do you reckon about water pump and coolant changes at the same time too, more unnecessary expense or worth doing?

  Black 182 FF
Water pump isn't much, not sure when they're scheduled, but stay genuine. One of those things I suppose, if you don't do it now it could go later or it might be ok leaving it alone if it isn't noisy or leaking. Generally they seem to last.

Think it's only driven off the Aux belt, so not essential to do now, but there are stories on here of ones prematurely failing and causing cam belt issues. Not sure how often that happens though.

Coolant change is easy enough, Renault type D stuff is only about £12.
