182 Purchase

My R26 had its belts done in 2014 - when it was 7 years old. God knows why people risk not doing them,i dont understand it.

It does seem insane that you would risk it, given the rather terminal consequence of the belt going ping/snap. Perhaps people assume the mileage is the only indicator? Who knows.

Because some people arnt clio heroes and know when they need to be done, people don't care

We've taken a 2004 jag s type diesel in part ex. Belts due at 105 or ten years, it's done 97.

MOT online suggests 60k (when the belts were done) was between Sept '11 & Sept '12, so at the very least they are due pretty much around now.

Agree the ad is good & appears honest, just seems steep given a 'mandatory' service is required immediately/imminently at a cost of £700 or so.
Ahhhh right . That's fair enough . Could you not message them , see if they'll come down half the price of the belts service ( around £300 ) I doubt they'll knock off the full price. The interior looks tidy , seats and steering wheel .
I think finding the perfect car and the perfect price is proving to be alot harder than it used to be .

You can get them cheaper than that - my Renault Specialist did my 182 (twice) for around £450. An RS200 is even cheaper to do,under £400.

People probably just go to a Renault dealership, see the £1000+ quote and dont bother.

That seems to be the going rate at a specialist in Edinburgh, although I've just had a look at SWR's (Stirling) page & they appear to price it at £380, which seems a little more pocket friendly.

Perhaps I'll have them confirm that price as that provides a little more leeway.

I think the seller will do the belts & sell to at the asking price, which seems reasonable. My only concern is that the belts won't be done at a specialist, just a 'regular' garage that to has been done at previously. Am I right to be concerned?

Yeah, it does seem to be difficult to find a fully sorted/cared for example in good condition, even with a reasonably healthy budget (perhaps it's not as healthy as I had imagined/hoped).

The seller would be mental to do the belts when he could just knock the price off.

Get a price list from Renault for both belt kits, dephaser, water pump, coolant, crank bolt and some new cam end caps.
He'll s**t himself and see the light I'm sure.

If his mate Dave is doing it with Tipex, you're better off not getting them done at all.

I'm pretty sure it's just a local guy (confirmed it was not a specialist). I could always ask about the price sans the belts, but I would be pretty nervous driving it back up to Edinburgh from Bucks with belts that are over/on the edge of replacement.

I have already confirmed the total price with a specialist & the seller was unconcerned, just said it could be done cheaper at a local garage.

Just looking at this one again:

https://www.gumtree.com/p/renault/clio-182-/1251148098

Good service history, belts done by a specialist in 2015(ish), good condition, well cared for but doesn't get up to high revs too often.

Some negatives - front tyres needed, bushes could do with replacement (noted on MOT), steering wheel has some 'melting', small dent in drivers door that has been 'touched up' by a garage but would need to be looked at properly & the AUX service would be required at some stage next year.

Has said fronts can be accommodated in the price. Looks pretty solid & the seller seems genuine etc but probably looking at £500-£600 in servicing costs etc over the course of the next 12-18 months (although providing nothing else fails, that would probably be it until the next cambelt change in 2020, annual servicing aside).

He might save £20 on parts and maybe £50 on labour.
But if he's got half a brain, he'll send it away with "CAMBELT OVERDUE" across the invoice and let you sort it. Thus voiding any responsibility he may have with the workmanship that you get carried out your end.

I suspect I could perhaps get the price down without the belts, which leaves me at around £2600, but with a £650 bill to face for the belts/dephaser & so on (found a cheaper quote), which is right up there pricewise (total) & I would spend the 6.5hr journey home terrified about the belts going....

Have you spoken to the seller ? Tyres aren't a biggy , they can be had for £70 a corner for something like Uniroyal Rainsports . He's told you that the servicing was carried out by a specialist ? Dents can be removed by a PDR guy usually for about £40 a dent .
If you're planning on keeping the car it's worth investing a few £££ for a good one . Looks like a standard exhaust from the pics . So that may need replacing at sometime in the near future as they do tend to rot from the inside out .
I wouldn't worry too much about buying one and driving it home thinking the belts might let go . Most people , unless they're on a car forum like CS are probably oblivious to the fact that servicing on time is quite imporant and just drive them anyway and never have a problem .

I have indeed.

It's sat on Michelin P3's at present. so I'll need 2 of those bought & fitted.

Yup, servicing & belts done by a specialist (haven't requested photos yet as I'd only do that once fully committed to buying).

Yeah, original exhaust is still on it, no issues to date but the inside out nature means you probably don't know it's about to fall to bits until it falls to bits?

I am planning to hang onto the car for some time so I don't mind tidying a few things up, I just don't want to be paying top prices for cars that need £££'s spent on them.

Have you been to see any yet ? or driven one ?
I think you're being a bit fussy personally, tyres & exhaust etc are no biggie, even small dents aren't.

6.5hours away.

Stuff that, surely there's one closer?
The money you'd be paying to travel add it to budget and get a better one?
That's my opinion anyway.

Rentec Autocare in Portobello are a decent bunch of guys if you're looking for somewhere local when you eventually get a 182.

I paid 2400 for mine, looked clean enough. Admittedly i rushed into buying it. Turned out to be a bit of a shed.

All I'll say is have a good look at any and take it for a good test drive. A friend if mine picked ip a good rb for 1200, hasnt had a single problem. Ive spent over 2400 on mine keeping it going...

There's a good few pop up on gumtree Scotland I bought mine off it with full service history
There's a blue 182 in armadale Lothian not far from you on gumtree put on 3hrs ago.
For 1400 quid the belts just been done and 10 months MOT
It's done 120k but that could be full service history
Might be worth a punt for the money for a little project for you

Nothing wrong with high milers. The one my friend has (from my previous comment) has 160k on it.

As long as they've been serviced propeely of course.

I guess that's my concern, although rare given the number of 182 sales that take place, there are a few tales of horror such as yours. I am trying to remain patient in the hope I avoid picking up a dog/shed.

I'm in contact with the seller for this example given its vicinity. Looks promising, despite being a high miler (doesn't appear to be an issue if well cared for it would seem).

Price gives me scope to tidy it up etc, if required, & I'll be able to go & have a gander.

My advise would be give it a thorough lool over, check the exhaust hangers, engine movement ect. Take it for a drive, fine a quiet country road and try out 2nd-3rd at high revs to see if you get a crunch. Listen for knocks ect, if everything seems fine I'm sure you'll be onto a winner.

belts need doing £550

bumper needs sorting £50 ish from a breaker

makes the base price of yours alittle high imo

that said what do i know a buyer may be just around the corner

It needs belts £500
Wheels doing, thats a choice thing, its not a new car.

if its as clean as it looks, 2200 needing belts doing. It looks tidy mate.
Thanks mate, I think at that sort of money I would rather do the belts myself and run it for a while longer to get my money's worth.

has anyone bought @Davyy 172 yet your all mugs for not snapping that up at 2.5k

No mate, which I'm kind of happy about. I'm saving to go travelling and a house so not a great time for me to sell, but I would. Only interest I've had is a lovely 2010 e90 BMW swap +£6k...
