182 Cup Rally Project

Clio Cup UK 182 Rally Car
Its Blyton airfield. Also known for its supermoto track and rallycross track! You can hire it for £50 a day and do whatever you like on there! Perfect for testing a new car out - aslong as you don't need your tyres after using it :dead:

Never seen the airfield layout before. Only ever known it as a rallycross track - brutal place that. Smells of rotting chickens if the wind is in the right direction.

That will be the maggot farm next door.

THE worst circuit i've ever been to!

Re: 182 Cup Rally Project !!*New Video Posted*!!

Thats ace, what rallies are you planning in the future? I used to have a 205, nothing like that tho! Good old bog-standard 1.6. GTi power for the 205 Challenge!

Its 275ish bhp and 780kg's so it goes well, just has reliability issues unfortunatly, once we have them cracked we will be flying, it started out as a standard gti my mum used to take me to school in lol so its come a fair way!!

Next event who knows, depends when we get the engine back from the builder as that could be a week to a year, but im hoping to get out in my clio again, did my 1st stage rally as a driver last month in my road rally car as i havent finished my mk2 escort yet and as it didnt fall apart, ill be doing more!

Just a quick update for you guys interested in the performance of the car on the Pendragon stages Rally a few weeks back - Car was running perfectly from the outset, unfortunatly on a slippy left-hand junction the right-hand rear wheel made love with a low bridge and managed to bend the rear beam :(

Managed to continue, couldn't use any of the power or handling as the car was constantly turning right on me, so had to do 6 stages like that before lunch! (started the afternoon dead last by 4 minutes!)

At the second service the service crew managed to shim the rear stub axle so that the car was towing straight! It was about 6 inches wider than it started due to all the washers in the stub axle, but it was handling fine now - maybe I could use the power for the final two 9.5mile stages?!

It started to pour down before the last stage and we had inters on all round - turned out to be the perfect tyre choice!

With the car pointing in the right direction (if not a bit twitchy!!:clown:) we managed to move up 20 places in the last two stages finishing 55th out of 75 finishers, from 120 starters, even though on every jump the right hand rear tyre let out a huge ploom of white smoke as it fouled the arch! :dead:

Just shows, when the cars running straight, it's mega competitive! It handles like an absolute dream - wet or dry.

Currently strengthening up, shot blasting and powder coating a 182 rear beam so that I can fit it in time for the next event!

Can't wait to get out on the next one now - RAF Swynnerton near Stoke on the 27th September.

Cheers,
Scott.

yeah rear beams are rubbish. the trophy has a few bits to make it stronger

we have already stiffened a rear beam for hissingsid. but rolling the car may have upset it slightly...

by this time next year you should have found all the weak spots. problem is when you stiffen something up it shifts the wear. what have you got in respect to bottom ball joints???

What do they do to the trophy beams then? I'll show you what we've done when I get it back from the powder-coaters.

The bottom joints are the Race Car "uniball" bearings, in the special billet housings. I've got a few sets left if you want to try them, you will need a bearing holder, bearing, circlip, pin and the two bolts I think. You may need the Race Car bottom arms which are expensive and I've not got any of those left to sell. They're well different to the Clio std. arms though.

I had to shorten the pin by 16mm I think so that all the geometry came back when we raised the ride-height. Lots of technical hours spent trying to work out how to get around the problem of the pins being too long, and the bump steer having issues - easiest option was simply to shorten them!

I'll get some photos up when the car's out the garage again (hopefully this weekend when I refit the beam!)

Scott.

Awsome project :approve:

What ecu are you running now to work with the gearbox? (assuming your still running the sadev gearbox)

Sorry to spam but how is the trophy rear beam different, where is it reinforced? (hadn't heard that before, why I am asking lol) Thanks

can you still use the ex cup sadev box? or do you need to change it for group n?
His car is Clubman spec group B like mine, so the rules are flexable regarding most things eg brakes, transmission, inlet manifold, etc etc. The only event he won't be able to do is rally GB Wales.

182 Cup Rally Project *UPDATES*

Hi guys,

Not been around on here for a while - busy Christmas, busy back at work etc etc.

Just to keep you updated, the last event I did with the car was the Adrian Barker Stages at Swynnerton and we finished 16th Overall!! An excellent all in all, we were second front wheel drive, and 6th in class (1601cc-2000cc).

We were able to keep up with some awesome looking machinery such as 4WD Escort Cosworths, Mitsubishi Evo's, Subaru Imprezas etc etc, all with excess of 280bhp. We were really pleased with the car and it's performance - the only downside being the brakes which over-heated very quickly with the 7/8 long stops from 120mph+ each stage. We even melted the valve caps after some of the stages - the mechanics having to wait 5 minutes at times for the wheels to cool before touching them.

I treated myself to some bespoke 300mm AP Racing discs and four-pot AP Racing callipers, courtesy of BG Developments in Bromsgrove. Photos to follow.

I will also have some videos up on here from the rally, just to show everyone how the car is now running.

This year there is a new motor on the way (with some more HP and torque), so watch this space and the FOR SALE forums for the current lump up for grabs ;)

First practice event of this year will be at Anglesey Race Circuit on Feb 28th, and the first championship round will be at Weston Park near Telford on the 21st March if anyone would like to come and see the car in action!

Any comments welcome!

That's the video from the Adrian Barker Memorial Stages at Swynnerton. All credit to MAD Video productions for their video work. All stages covered in the one vid. Note the "near miss" at 4.04............some people say that if anything happens to a rally car, it is always on the Co-Drivers side - well this would have been but its a French Motorsport shell, so its LHD - and this was my side!!

What pads are you going to run in the 4pots?

The engine bay looks mint. Any more biger pictures?

Not sure on the pads at the mo, they're in the box ready to go in but need to think about if I'm going to use a different material. I have been advised that these are the best for tarmac rallying, so I may just suck it and see. I'll post a pic/specs of the brake kit when it's on the car, hopefully saturday

Looks like a very nicely sorted little car, just needs more power, which you have obviously worked out yourself lol.

We def have to sort out the flat shift for our box, got the latest Emerald software version now so can do it where we couldnt before.

Damm good result as like you say theres some very quick cars out there now.

The regs say that first car will be at 10.00am, but this is usually an estimate. Could be anything between 9.00 and 10.30

Come and say hi! I'll post on here what number we are when I know myself!

Haha yeah it will ;)

If you're about on the Saturday, we'll be up there on the afternoon/night for scrutineering and noise check so pop over then if you're not far away. We're staying at the venue Sat night. You'll have more of a chance to look round the car then, we'll all be rushing around come Sunday lol!

Sounds good fella, il be around most probably as the track is only 20min from me, whats the chance of a free passenger ride ;)

Haha we'll see what we can do - Won't be allowed on the track as this would be illegal practicing, but depending on the weather then I might be able to take you up the road in it. There are always last minute jobs being done though, so no promises.

Car looks setup well Scott, had a matedown there in a lotus Martin tinker, he said it was a good venue was there another 2 clio's there?

Clio Cup UK 182 Rally Car
Hi Alistair!

Was Martin in a purple Exige? If that was him then he was doing pretty well! It was a super venue, we'll deffo be back there if they don't clash with any championship rounds this year. We're going to be doing the Heart of England championship, so not really North enough for you!

I may stray up to the Pendragon again so get yourself out up there!

The furthest North I get will probably be Caerwent at the end of the year. I'd love to do Croft but its just too far really for a SV!
