182 Cambelt change: need manual/guide

  RS CLIO 197
Theres always debate on here as to how hard and technical the belt changes are, and who should do them. Also, the whole tool thing really gets me. If you can demonstrate to me whats the issue with the Laser tools I will eat them. Neither the crank locking pin or the cam locking tool would bend if you put them in a vise and smacked them with a hammer. They both fit perfectly. They both did exactly what they should have done.
The car is running better than ever and therefore its a job well done.

Oh, and final thought for the day: why would the tools bend anyway? They are not supposed to take any torsional force since all they are doing is preventing the crank and cams moving whilst the belt, tensioner and rhs pulley are fitted. When the crank pulley nut is tightened it is prudent (and in the Renault guide for that matter) to hold the flywheel anyway.

No, you shouldn't try and change your bloody cambelt if all you have ever done in the past is unscrew an oil filter and change your spark plugs, but a competent home mechanic could manage no problems with a bit of thought and care. All this scaremongering is quite frankly nonsense.

exactly :approve:

Exactly. And you stick £250 in your back burner every time I expect!

Seriously though, for the people that need a garage to do this, the people to take it to are the likes of GDI, Fred etc etc. They know exactly what they are doing, unlike Renault, and you get (I presume) a warranty and a pretty stamp in your service book. I wouldn't trust Renault, or any other main dealer for that matter, to do a 100% pukka job. Unfortunately, for every good technician they have there is always a poorer version knocking about in the workshop!

HOWEVER, you still haven't told me what the problem with aftermarket tools are. If they fit, and you lock the flywheel whats the issue??? If I was doing as many as you guys I would get the Renault kit, but for a one off job, the Laser kit IS FINE!

Now lets stop bickering like children!

By the way, for a bit of light hearted entertainment, i'll tell you about the fun I had at Subaru once!

Took my Impreza for a cambelt as I wanted to keep the dealer service history. When it came back it was rattling its t1ts off. Had a quick look to find a 13mm spanner left on the intercooler. Took it back up the road just to see what they would say! I didn't tell them about the spanner. They took it into the workshop to have a look whilst I had a brew and sat in the showroom cars going "brum brum".

Anyway, half an hour later the technician comes in and tells me he's got bad news. The engine apparently has "probably spun a shell because I didn't let it warm up!". I was told it needed a full strip and rebuild.

Obviously I told them I would think about it and never went back to a Subaru main stealer. Kept the spanner too, which was Snap On. Nice!

And another:

My friend took his 4.4 V8 X5 to BMW as it was running like a bag of cr4P. They charged him £150 for "diagnostic work" and told him the inlet manifold gaskets were leaking and all 8 coilpacks needed replacing. Total charge around £1500.

I replaced the MAF for £50 and it fixed the problem.

AVOID MAIN DEALERS AND FIND A SPECIALIST YOU CAN TRUST!

Off topic -
Lol @ the irony of his username and the reason of the thread.

If you mean me, i've always been Mad Scientist on all the forums I lurk on. Mainly as I am!

Don't see the irony though.

Reason for thread? Needed a guide/manual as I didn't fancy guessing the torque of a friction fit crank pulley.

;)

problem with aftermarket tools = there is NO cam pulley locking tool available, and if you dont use one when you torque the cam pulleys, the timing WILL move. Typed that more times than i can remember on here

No there isn't. And I didn't use one as I didn't remove the cam pulleys. I have seen no evidence on here or anywhere else to show why this is required. Maybe there has been occasion where the timing ends up off because people haven't done this (procedure 1) as the guide. I don't see how though. Procedure 2 works and my car (actually I bought it for my GF TBH) is running perfectly.

Where do you find the links to these Renault documents? I'm trying to gather as many as I can. It's a shame you can't buy a Haynes manual for the Clio 172 :(
