I'm about to investigate some knocking noises from front of my mk3 Clio DCI. I have a small trolley jack and a pair of Axel stands I have that I want to put under the sills. Where is the best place to jack car. On my nice flat drive and car is standard ride height.

Re 6. I find best way to diagnose wheels bearing is to jack up car. Spin wheel and place hand on spring. Any vibration felt through the spring generally point to failing wheel bearing

Sounds like thermostat stuck shut or gubbed water pump. When the car has heated up the top radiator hose should be warm. If its cold then the stat is stuck shut and not allowing the coolant to circulate round the rad. It may be open a little hence its not completely over heating.
