What is THE best single game you've ever bought and why?

  F82 M4
Easy decision for me. I don't want no 1st, 2nd or 3rd place, just simply YOUR all time favourite game ever, past or present.

Mine?

Half Life. I don't even need to explain why...

Time wise has to be unreal tournament, dread to think how many hours I spent playing that online over the years.

Championship Manager 1997/98 season.

Was the blueprint for all future football games, actually 96/97 was but 97/98 took a massive leap forward.

Mine is Half-Life also, at the time there was nothing to touch it. Whereas these days if they released a new Half-Life there is still plenty of other comparably good games, COD, Fallout etc

At the time Half-Life was worlds apart from anything else.

MW2. I haven't spend that amount of time on any other game. I even wanted to get up early at the weekend and play it.

Difficult to say really, very difficult.

For me probably Mass Effect, as it was so far ahead of anything else like that I've played before, in so many ways, and changed the way I thought about games.

(Goldeneye was amazing though!!! :) )

difficult one tbh...but for me it has to be

Final Fantasy VII, I was genuinely hooked on everything, story line was epic and very gripping, just had to keep playing to find out what was happening next. Very and I mean VERY few games can actually get me hooked in that way these days...

Also, Secret Of Mana on the SNES was simply awesome! (I'd be interested to know how many people have actually played or even heard of it!)

I can't see how games like MW can really be classed as THE best game anyone has ever played. They are good yes, but not the best. They are just good for pick up and play and having a few laughs. Shooting several people using the same guns on the same maps over and over again is hardley ground-breaking stuff IMO.

Tekken or Wipeout...

At the time these two games were yeaaaaars ahead of other computer games and I was at the age where that was exciting :)

Seminal moment was first playing Doom, running on the PC in about '93-'94, but in terms of time spent playing probably the GTA series from 3 onwards. Couldn't pick one from them as played them all to 100% many times, but seen as how this is a car club i'll say Vice City as that has the most fun car handling physics.

Shenmue and Zelda OT. Too close to call.

Both re-defined gaming in their own right.

The best computer game I've played... Dungeon Master (on the Atari ST, for those old enough to remember it). It kept me hooked for aaaaaaaaaages and I loved it. Great map design, great spell system, great character development, good blend of enemies.

The best console game I've played... Super Mario World (on the SNES). The most perfect and rewarding run and jump platformer ever made. Pure gaming Heaven.

Probably the Crash Bandicoot series when i was a kid on the Playstation 1, played them and completed them all religiously.

But the best was without a doubt Uneral Tournament 99 GOTY Edition, countless hours playing this online nothing could even come close to online, 10 years later and i still pop on their every now and again. The most influencial game ever made for the PC imo.

Ah. You had it on the ST. Us 'poor' Amiga owners had to foot the extra £65 or so for the 512k memory upgrade! But yep, it was an awesome game. My m8 completed it many times - even trying it with just one character (Stamm the dwarf, iirc) and managing it. FTL means something completely different on here, but FTL to me is one of the iconic developers of games. Such as shame that their product range was literally a flash-in-the-pan.

For me, it is without doubt Wasteland from 1988 by Electronic Arts & Interplay. Played on the Commodore 64 via 5.25" disks it was truly an epic RPG game. The grand-daddy of the current Fallout series - it gave you the scope to wander, interact and develop your characters; all on a computer with the processing power of a current day watch. In gaming terms, it was like flying the Wright Brothers' flyer - then being give the SR-71 to pilot. A complete paradigm shift in capabilities.

Since then, I've looked into the coding of how Wasteland worked (yes, sad I know) - but those programmers were nothing short of geniuses. In such limited memory space, they allowed random and calculated events to flourish whilst containing such a varied and enjoyable gaming environment.

Truly a benchmark in gaming. Certainly from the RPG perspective.

Are the MW crowd of a younger generation? I can't fathom how any COD game could be ranked so highly over some of the older games that have been mentioned.

Just off the top of my head; Half Life 2, GTA Vice City, Uncharted 2 - because when playing all of them I had a OMFGTHISISAMAZINGLOLZ! feeling at least once.

The older games were of course good, but always got bored of playing them at some point. I've played nothing else more than MW2

Older games weren't online.

Older games you'd play the single player game over and over again, you would never do that on MW2 you'd just go online.

Can't really decide. Difficult one. Single player games for the PC, I'd have to say any of the Championship Manager series. Single player games for consoles, I'd say GTA : Vice City or San Andreas. Single player games for next gen, Uncharted 2 on the PS3. Two player games, Pro Evo Soccer 4 - 6. Multiplayer games, definitely Battlefield : Bad Company 2.

Tough one as I used to really enjoy the Max Payne, The Getaway, GTA and True Crime games but i'd say the game I really enjoyed most was Fallout 3.

Played it everynight when I got home from work til I completed it. Awesome.

Enjoying borderlands atm :)

Elite was my favourite game and the one I wish they would remake. BBC Micro

But considering that I suspect that will never happen I would have to go for Eve Online it is pretty much the closest thing to it. Just a game that has so many ways to go with no linear career path. Been playing it on and off now for about 5 years.
