As some of you know had a few issues with my old monaco and in the end had to get shut and sell to a breaker,

Quite gutted as for the price I paid and the fun I had it was an awesome car,

Anyhow I've bought this as a run around for the time being needs a few bits and bats so got it quite cheap.

Seems a nice car great build quality and nicer seating position to the clio, anyone else own one? Needs the stripes taking off ASAP

To be honest mate think I'm gunna whip them all off as I'll be painting the wheels black and will look odd. Blue lowered on black wheels without the stripes should look good :)

Nice. I think they need mods but I loved mine. Great all rounder.

Get rid of the stripes though, they offer nothing now.

Remove stripes, slightly lower and SILVER wheels. It'd be a nice motor then.

My mate has one of these with just the side stripes, plastidiped black wheels, wind deflectors, plastic trim around the fogs all black and lowered. Looks pretty sweet! Although i would like to see it back on standard silver wheels as when i see them on others they are a really nice set as standard.

It was purposely built with lower power in mind to please the warm hatch crowd. Lower power= lower insurance= hundreds of thousands of youths buying them.

As standard they're as flat as a pancake, they had to limit these out of the factory due to still producing the focus st170 , if you look at these properly due to the size of the engine the airbox is about as thick as an a4 piece of paper with a poor air feed as well as this the exhaust manifold and cat pipe are very restrictive

Swap these two items over for a K&N cone on a 90 degree bend and a milltek full decat system and they're running around 170ish on dyno's some less some more then they're in the same league as a 172 IMO

You can feel how restrictive they are as when your gunning it and change gear you get a sudden urge of power as you come back onto power, reminds me of my old 1.0 corsa lol

Handling wise both clios and these are similiar both love lift off oversteer but the fiesta feels taller in the bends get a slight bit of body roll,

Overall impression so far, slow but nicer place to be inside and for long distances :)

Couldn't have said it any better. Barring the ST170 thing. That's not the reason they restricted them.

My one was 171 on the dyno (done before I purchased and fixed it). I do agree they feel taller but on the eibachs and decent tyres they were fantastic.
On 16s they were even better.

Mine... Thread and spec are on here somewhere.

172 had issues and wouldn't of been worth repairing I got this ST for the same price a 2004 182 would go for so I won't loose money if anything I should make on it so I'm happy to run it for a while when it's modded if it's still pants after mapping etc it will go haha :)

That was the Zetec S. The ST should have had more power to compete with the Clio/EP3 etc. Ford got it wrong. IMO.

You actually couldn't be anymore wrong.

Lets put it another way, why did Ford restrict the power?

Could it be to lower insurance rates? Thus opening the car to a younger, less cash rich audience? An audience which happens to be larger than the niche market of only small number of the population that can afford to buy and insure 200BHP shopping trolleys?

Probably not.

Ford fan boys are so cringe worthy lol.

Who really cares, the difference is minor anyway, stop trying to justify the fact the ST is slower.. Besides if it worked so well before why have they not done the same again with the current gen?

But I still think that is what the Zetec S is, a fancy looking fiesta for young lads. My mate had one of those ones with the chequered roof.

My point is that Ford failed to make it a proper hot hatch competitor. Why would they restrict it? Not sure, I don't know enough about the engine. Does it have VVT or anything like the other n/a hot hatches do?

Lets put it another way, what other 150bhp hot hatches were out in 2005? Not many that I can think of. Were Ford trying to create a fan base that simply wasn't there? I bet there were many disappointed Ford fans at the time finding that standard Clios and Civics were much quicker from the factory. Ford has clearly realised that since the current ST keeps with the competition from the Clio and previous generation Civic.

Does anyone have any sales figures then? They aren't an uncommon car, so genuinely interested to what they sold.

Autotrader research, not at all accurate, but it gives us an idea.

Total cars on Autotrader for sale 411,392. Roughly filtered into:

EP3 - 146

182 - 58
172 - 43
101

Fiesta ST - 235 :eek::eek::eek::eek:

Woah, quite shocked at that! No way did they outsell the clio 2:1 though surely? Wish I could find some proper stats!

They have done it with the current fiesta. 180hp with 'hidden' over boost.

Daniel, search the figures and you'll see. Also it's not a hot hatch, again.

You've never seen the sales figures have you?

And the current Fiesta ST is on par with its peers, not trailing behind like the Mk6.

How was it not a hot hatch? It was Ford's flagship Fiesta. I bet if you found a sales brochure from the period when they were on sale you'll find hot hatch buzz words all over it.

Yep, they've popped up on here before.

It's only up there with it's competitors due to the over boost feature.

I wouldn't class the St as a hot hatch like the clio sports, Ibiza cupras, corsa vxr etc etc as it just doesn't compete.

id class it more as a warm hatch, for people who couldn't insure said cars, in a class with things like c2 vts, colt czt, cooper s

don't get me wrong I don't think the car is quick in fact I feel its pretty pants, ive got it as a cheap run around as said ive probably paid high mileage 182 money for this so its a bit of a bargain and I wont loose money so im happy with it :)
