What's the best lens for macro shooting?

Main thing to look for is a 1:1 magnification ratio, secondly you want a pretty long focal length (ideally 60mm or more, but nearer 100mm for insects etc). The Tamron 90mm 2.8 (which I use) and Sigma 105mm 2.8 are two of the most popular macro lenses at a reasonable budget.

Or stick a close-up filter on an existing lens you have, cheap and does the job surprisingly well. This was taken with the Nikon 18-55 kit lens (from the Nikon D50 days) with a screw on close-up filter...

I had a trip to an old Fort island at the weekend. It dates back to 1880 but was used during WWII too. I love war stuff so had a great time and all doors were open for us to explore.

Kit lens, nikkor DX 18-55 VR with a cheap shitty wide angle screw on.

To be fair I chucked it on AP, 5.3 and shot away. It's been a while since I've used my camera so I forget to do things like set the aperture.

Yeah, I can't fault the kit lens, as long as it's used properly it can produce some decent shots. I've also got a Nikkor 55-300 AF VR2 an it's eye opening to say the least at how far away you can get at 300mm!

Yep RAW, then just throw a grad filter in ACR. I do love the XE1 and am torn between that and the X100s to replace my X100.

I'm guessing that if you shoot raw you can just expose for the sky and then pull the details from the shadows.

IIRC planet x underexposes his shots for the moody skies and pulls back some detail in raw.
