Looking for a new car.

Hi there, i'll be looking for a new car in the near future, but i dont know what to look for.

got to be a hatchback, sporty and not too expensive.

anything newer than 2002, in good condition and a max engine size would have to be a 1.6 16v due to insurance.

any ideas?

ive been thinking of a saxo vts or a 106 gti but my brother has a vts, and hes had a lot of problems with his axel, heard the same sort of thing with the 106's.

any suggestions / advice?

thanks!

Serious question - have you compared (no not the bloody meercat website, a real human being on the phone of a decent specialist insurer like Greenlight or Sky) the insurance on a ph1 172 to a 1.6 clio / vts etc....?

EVERYTHING is silly to insure now, and for a few hundred quid (which you might save in the purchase price !? what's your budget anyway ? ) you might have a nice RS on your drive rather than a naff French girls car made of tinfoil ;)

im 19, no ncb, passed my test march the 1st, 2010.
A budget of around 2k to buy the car with but im still in the process of saving.

No i havent tried phoning anyone because i thought it would be more expensive because you'd lose the online discount, but ill defo give it a go.

i was looking at a ph1 but all the online quotes came up around 3k for monthly payments.

also, is it more expensive to insure a ph2 2000 - 2003 than it is to insure a ph1 2000 - 2003?

You won't get discount online from the decent insurers (Sky, Greenlight etc.. Sky offer discount to CS members.)

It might be cheaper for me but the other way around for you. Insurance is essentially a random number generator. The only way to find out is to call them and find out dude !

Also some companies charge 20-40% more over the year if you do monthly rather than one lump. Worth asking the 'rents for a favour and paying them monthly if it's comedy value. Might save you a grand !!

i didnt know this... ive just been looking on the search engines :s

ill defo phone up though.

also another option, what about third party, fire and theft? is that a big no no?

Most the time it's cheaper fully comp as most insurers won't offer a third party quote

Alright i see, any info on the difference between the different models? ph1 and ph2? they are classed in the same year, 2000 to 2003 so is there a difference in price?

Ask the insurer. Hate to say it but it takes a lot of time on the phone to find teh best deal. But I have always paided, hundreds less than online quotes.

yeah i guessed it would be longer, ive still got a bit of saving to do as i'd like to be able to have a bit left over for simple mods and my deposit for the insurance!

plenty time to search about for a decent enough example!

  top of the pyramid
106 gti, elise mk1 bit older but alot of fun or what about a mx5.

Or just stick with what you have until the insurance is cheaper/ you have more no claims bonus

mate being 19, having no ncb, thanless youve got 10k you can pretty much forget about a sporty hatch, you wont get insured on a vts as im pretty sure its insurance group 16 or more. Your best bet is an MG ZR 105+, i had 1 your age, 1.4l (blue), was very cheap to insure, with a few little mods can be a nice car, never had a problem with it either. it was an 03 and had only 33,000on clock, theyre goin for about 2k! have a look, theyre not quick but it did me until i got a few years ncb and got a 182!

hope this helps

That 4.5k was a ph2 172. Some of those companies only insure 21+ and some only do anual. I can't afford annual atm. Thanks for the info wilsonm3, I'm not really that keen on those MGs though. Ill stick with the 1.2 for a while I guess.Till I save 4.5k LOL

  MK3 GTI golf 16v
Brentacre, HIC, Adrian Flux, Bell might be the best to try for your age.

bell/admiral/elephant would be the best bet.

when i was looking (im 18) brentrace, adrian flux etc etc all said i was too young. probably same story for this fella

liamclio16V. look at elephant, they were one of the cheapest for me for a 172.

Yeah they are coming up cheapest... but they only do annual and i dont have the cash atm :/

I can get it cheap in my mothers name but f**k that, i want to build up no claims so ill just keep the 1.2 for now and save my arse off till i can afford to pay it. annoying.

theres a boy i work with, hes 19 and has passed his test for 2 years, hes a labourer and hes got an Astra GSI turbo. cost him 2.5k for insurance. hows that

thanks alot for the help lads! much appreciated

If you can't afford the annual put it on a 0% credit card. Pay in x a month and you're sorted. Or just pay more by paying monthly.

I have been with elephant in the past and currently with Admiral (I know they are tyeh same company but they compete with each other, lol) and found them cheap. Norwich Union, now Aviva were good aswell.

Provided you have self control and are organised Credit Cards can be VERY useful and make you money.

Liam - as I said, ask your parents for a favour regarding the balance. I can't imagine a 1.1 fiesta will be 'cheap' to insure for you anyway, let alone a grp 16 Clio ?!

Pay monthy, f**k credit cards!

Sorry !?

Insurers tend to charge upwards of 20 or 30% on your premium for monthly instalments... I think the APR on my c/card is 16% if I were to leave something on there for a whole year. Pay off 1/12 of the balance every month and the interest payment will drop as the amount you owe is less.

No brainer surely... :S

  1.6 Focus, 1.6 122S
Read my previous post Burble Bloke. I'm like you, careful, but there are those out there that get carried away and before you know it are using cards to pay off cards with no end in sight!

You can even get 0% APR deals atm too.

To be honest I've never really looked into then.

But the way you put it then is pretty useful.

I suppose you just have to be sensible

You just need to be finacially aware and always pay them off, don't see them as an alternative to a Debit Card, more a help to get over large payments.

moneysavingexpert.com is pretty useful.

yeah that credit card idea actually sounds good but the best quote ive had in my own name for a ph2 (which i'd rather) has been around 2.9k and tbh thats just silly. so i wont be getting one just yet.

i may do that for another, smaller engined car though, saves a good 3-400 quid on some quotes!
was looking at a C2 VTS and it doesnt seem that expensive, 1.4k anually, same for a 1.8 16v corsa C SRI!

thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it.
