Joe's Ph2 172

When you said garage opposite it narrowed it down too.

I've not ever heard anything bad about them but they don't scream professionals to me. It may be worth taking it somewhere else, or I could probably do it if you got parts for some beer money.

The main guy seems alright. Been there a couple of times over niggly things and they haven't charged me or anything. I'll see how It goes and what they say. I can usually smell bs a mile off :)

I've not had a Clio for 18 months, doesn't seem many around at the minute either. I live just outside Bury.

Bad news and something I should have seen coming tbh. That exhaust rattling noise wasnt the new exhaust.

It was the alternator that some crazy fool decided to only have bolted in one place meaning....yep you guessed it...it snapped off explaining why my belt came off.

So im looking at a nice £500 ish repair bill. New alternator, belt and tensioners as well as the labour and VAT (I dont get that, my car breaks and I pay the government for the privilege??)

Not too happy with reno tec Chelmsford who I bought it from. The reason I bought it was because all the belts were done and it had a new alternator and battery etc. Maybe next time they might put two bolts on the alternator..

Hi Joe,
Really would recommend doing it yourself. If I can do it anyone can. Its not hard just a little fiddly. I followed this thread and then added a few bits of information to help others.

Dont buy a brand new alternator as they are well expensive. get a second hand one off someone breaking a car and you are all set. Would buy the belt off renault though.

  SQ5
DONT BUY A SECOND HAND ALTERNATOR.

You'll spend £50-80 on one and on an exchange basis with Renault a new alternator won't cost more than £150.

All easy enough to fit yourself

Its all done now and set me back a lot of money. Had I been at home this whole facade could have been avoided. But thats what happens when you work away I guess.

Whats also annoyed me is that the car is all done and as I turn out the garage the indicators are going spastic. Check the bulb...fine. Go back to the garage and seems like on of the connectors is fucked so a bodge job later and they will sort it out next week when im back up here. Just thouroughly pisses me off as they must have caused it as it was fine when given to them. Also just driving the car it could be in my head but its doesnt feel right to me. Probably in my head though. Already I feel like sacking the Clio off and getting another 106Gti.

Indicators randomly coming on is a weird fault, but all my Clio's have always done it 10+.

Ph2's usually points to faulty UCH

Nah It wasnt coming on at all. The problem seemed to point to the rectangle connector at the bottom of the headlight (in engine bay) seems fine at the moment but will get them to swap it for a new one. Way I see it is that I gave it to them without that problem which is how I want it back.

My real problem now is going to be phoning reno tec and telling them about my problems. I may not have bought the car directly from them and without a warranty but when you are a renault specialist I would expect them to not sell someone a car thats not got its alternator on properly!

There's also more bad news. The noise whipe accelerating wasnt the alternator its the lower gearbox mount? I bought the powerflex dogbone mount the other day but garage has told me its the lower gearbox mount which I assume is something different altogether.

  SQ5
There are two, one on the front and the one on the back is the dogbone.

What kind of noise is it as they will only make clunking noises

  172
Car is more or less all sorted. Just come back from my (local) garage today and had

Dogbone mount fitted
Coolant changed

Now the dogbone mount is bloody awesome! No more clunking and horrid noises. Car is slightly more vibratey but only when sat still at idle. Im more than happy to live with that. Car just feels better to be honest. Feels firmer and tighter somehow. £38 well spent!

Also phoned ktec and very pleasant people to deal with. Customer servive and helpfulness is top notch! Just need them to relocate to Essex!

The rubbers on the stealth system I bought had more or less perished in about a month! Shocking! So they are sending new one's out to me. Few pictures and no hassle and fuss so well impressed to be honest. If these are as bad as the last renault batch we will have to think about a permenant solution though.

I know the french are fond of cheese but the rubbers on clios are horrendous! France must have a lot of unexpected babies!

Sorry to hear of the problems.

K-Tec for parts and things like roll cage fitting, fine. You may want to do some reading around on here before you rush down there for anything that involves mapping. Say no more.

I don't think I would trust ANYONE anyway to be honest. My car won't get more than the exhaust and maybe a panel filter anyway as engine mods are just asking for trouble imo.

I mean is there anyone on here thats reliably been using a turbo setup on their 172 for ten years? Probably not!!

Lol at K-tec customer service being top notch.

I would rather saw my own c**k off with a rusty spoon than deal with them ever again. f**king shite.

Turbo and supercharged Clio's are very reliable if maintained as a turbo or supercharged car should be.

So rather than buy new wheels im going to refresh the ones I have. Going to keep the car fairly standard so I can do some trackdays this year.

What are people's thoughts on...

Gloss black?
Ford graphite grey?
Iceberg silver with the diamonds graphite grey (already are)

  172
So not much other than having some "interesting" moments in the wet. The last I was sure I was going to end up in a ditch! Luckily I had the sense to lift off and bring the back out to cure the understeer but boy did I doodoo myself!

Decided this month im going to be spraying the wheels in iceberg silver and next month get a panel filter. I would try the fattys setup but I dont want to risk losing power and also if I have a prang I want my insurance to cover me!

After that tyres are a must and maybe get some new brakes as these dont feel amazing but that could just be due to the naff tyres.

  172
So its not been great lately. Interior fans decided to pack in and the CD player likes to come up with "CD ERR"

Oh and some little cuntwhore decided to key everyone in our neighbourhoods cars last night which is always nice! Everyone is out for blood! Personally if I find the b**ch I'd leave him a nice little facial present he wouldn'g get off for the next 30 years or so...

  172
Not much to report other than I've been cold for the past month or so with no heating in the car.

Ordered myself a service pack from opie oils and sump tool from amazon so will see how I get on with that...any tips?

Also ordered a new style rs badge off ebay

and......

I have a nice new fault....looks like I may need a new cat ir lambda (im gonna guess cat) as the anti pollution light has come on on the dash. Bloody Clio...I wss warned these cars like to fall apart!

I think mine sits a little low, well for a daily but it handles really well. True test will be on track. Here's a pic of mine

Small world i used to own YR02 TWE and only over the water in liverpool lol

Would just like to congratulate black circles on being the biggest bunch of t***s ever.

Ordered tyres on wednesday to be fitted tomorrow and they tell me end of today they won't have them in. Well don't let me book it in then t***s! Then when I tell them to cancel the order they hang up on me! Big mistake now I'll be charging them for my time and phone bills. Nice one you useless pricks!

  172
Finally got some decent tyres fitted. Locally and a bit cheaper than Black Circles!

Uniroyal Rainsport 3's...because Great Britain :)

Can't comment on them yet as I've not been alone in the car and thankfully the missus goes back to work next week meaning I have days to get all the jobs I need to done! GREAT SUCCESS!!!

  172
They were a bit of a win all round as they are good in the dry as well as being fairly good with the eco stuff.

Also means I'll be going round the outside of the track cars on their semi slicks on rainy track days lol

  172
Impressed with the tyres...though I noticed there are now "outside" wheel weights on the wheels could just be me but it feels like the steering is even more vague and iffy. If I go round a slow coner and boot it you would expect the wheel to straighten itself but it doesnt like to without some sort of input.

Im also sort of proud of myself today as (supervised) I did a complete oil and filter change. I say supervised as im kind of weird when it comes to jacks and axle stands etc.....basically its scares the s**t out of me. I blame Afghan...basically I've had this sort of weird belief that I would die in a stupid accident at home or somewhere as it would be "just my luck" so I kind of freak at getting underneath a car to do anything...yes its weird I know.

So the missus Dad helped me jack it up and we put an axle stand under the front subframe is it? and I then made him out another one under the jacking point and then have the jack underneath as well. Obviously the sump plug was hard to undo and there was me freaking that the car would fall on me LOL

Was nice when it was all done though. Nice clean vegetable looking oil versus the old black gunk that came out so happy with that.

If I can bear getting under the car again I may fit my skoda splitter tomorrow. Maybe.

  172
Forgot to mention I borrowed Martins machine polisher and gave the car a good going over. Looks amazing now! Will need to give it a wax now.

Anyone thinking of buying one I would highly recommend it if you are into your paint whoring etc (which im not really) only problem is I got a bit keen on the key scratches that the little hooded asshole did and burnt a fair amount of paint off on the rear quarter. Oops! Least I did it on the s**t panel and not a good one! Also took a bit of paint off the edges of the cup spoiler which I had to touch up but I should have known better to be honest. Least I've learnt from it!

Also removed the soundproofing inside the car above the exhaust and as suspected it does naff all so glad I got rid of it. Might get rid of some more if I can be bothered to go under the carpets.

Shouldnt be much to report now. Need to fit the Skoda splitter and long term I need a bucket seat and decent quality suspension (doesnt handle anywhere near as good as my old saxo) and some decent standard brakes.

Also need to get some time in at Snetterton :D Brakes first though.

  172
Didn't bother with the splitter in the end. Its not like its going to actually do anything and will probably sell the cup spoiler too as its heavy as hell compared to the sport one, makes the rear window dirty and imo is less aerodynamic.

Oh you want pictures? Okay here's some after its wax today.

Sort of. I've not driven a hatchback that could handle as well apart from maybe the 200 cup and the current 172 is nowhere near to it when it comes to corners.

Im thinking maybe AP racing coilovers might sort it out a bit.

  SQ5
I've had a 106 Gti and plenty of Clio, and standard/standard the 172 is miles better.

Put some decent coilovers on and refresh all components and you have no competition at all.

  172
The 197 and 200 looked to be going fairly well only getting overtaken by the M3's etc on the ling straights. The quickest 1*2 had to be the silver one which had a rear diffuser thing...never saw the car in the pits though which was a shame! Blue 172 cup needed an lsd from what I saw lol
