do i have to apply copper grease to new pads?

  work for BMW
Well I have just done my first ever front pads change which makes me extremely happy :)

Though I have not put any copper grease on the backing of the new pads, is it essential that I do? Should I go buy some ?

Pug 106 btw

  A special one.
I always do but more importantly a little on the bit on the pads where they slide/fit into the caliper

Ive seen god knows how many cars with pads that have rusted into the caliper.
Pads cant move away from the disc causing them to get hot and brake up.

NEVER EVER put copper grease on brake components

It's a very very old fashioned thing that some people think stops them squeeking
Copper grease when it gets hot in brakes turns to liquid and runs onto the pads and contaminates them

There's no need at all on modern calipers/pads

Lol at NEVER EVER.

I'd agree with NEVER EVER putting it on contact patches, but around the back of the pads and where it hits the sliders isn't going to do any harm.

It also knackered up abs sensors and things (or so the Mintex rep keeps telling me)

On the back of the pads does NOTHING - the piston pushes the pad at 90 degrees - there's nothing to slide.
On the edge where it hits the sliders is the only arguable place to use it but to build up rust that would resist the pushing force of a caliper piston you'd have to not use the car for 3 years.
And trust me it does melt and it does spray onto the disc.

There's no reason to use it. Just clean the sliders up properly and get rid of all the rust before you put them in - if the pads are a really tight fit just file the ends down a touch. Don't use fecking grease on brakes

No one needs to talk to me for me to answer, this is a forum, not a private conversation.

Exactly - so why post saying it wasn't relevant when the comment about it killing ABS was aimed at the forum - just because you don't have it on your car doesn't mean everyone in the world doesn't.

Weirdo.

Also copper grease is petroleum based - rubber piston seals corrode when they get petroleum based grease on them - so greasing the back of your pads is more likely to destroy the dust seals than it is to stop any "squeaking"

If you have to use anything I'd suggest a high temp silicon grease but proper anti squeal shims are better if they are squeaking - BUT 106 calipers/pads don't squeak at all and definitely don't need copper grease.

Do you still have the standard 106 quiksilver setup? If you have i'm surprised you're not dead lol

Have to say can't argue with anything Phil has said ..... brakes stay dry , no grease anywhere , if you don't like brake squeal fit anti squeal pads to the backs , other than that brakes are and always will be on my cars 100% dry

Yup

It's a really really old mechanics trick from the days of mk1 escorts etc...

One of my mates recently came off track saying his brakes didn't work and smoke pooring off one - when we checked the mechanic had put copper grease on the pads - it had melted and splattered all over the disc.

My rear calipers the rubber piston rings had swollen up because they'd had copper grease on and the petroleum reacted with the rubber.
Horrid stuff for brakes.

FYI.. :)

modern materials, i haven't used copper grease in years

I was always told Never Ever put copper grease anywhere near brakes.

I use padgid break lube for the edges of the pads the moving bits to prevent pads from getting stuck in the carrier.

Never had issues with it.

Funny thing is I don't use copper grease either.

I use a dab of regular white grease. Always have. Never had any problems.

Just to add my input :) I use copper crease on the runners just to stop them seizing :) nothing worse than squeaky brakes. I have sure the calliper is wire brushed down, even gone to the extreme of filing pad edges down so they move freely. Wouldn't recommend that though.
