I had to stretch for that money if I was to get it before Christmas you see, plus the fact I saw a 2011 one go for £750 a week or two previous. Ah well, this is a mint one with all the packaging so it should be great

Haha, I’ve heard that a few times of late with such purchases

Most people my age p*ss their money down the drain with items that they can’t get their money back on, while with the same amount I can get items such as this, which actually earn me money through my paid work.

Fair play and that's a good attitude I didn't have a job at 15/16 so was somewhat parent reliant until I finished my gcse's and worked on a fruit farm for a while. Good L glass will hold its value though, more of an investment, probably better than a bank if its looked after!

Yeah, I could sell this lens in a year and barely lose £50 on it (not that I'm going to, it's awesome)

Whats a good camera to be starting out with? Just want something to take half decent photos with rather than a mobile or a little point and shoot.

Is the 600d too old now? What about a Canon 1000d? They both seem to be pretty cheap on ebay these days?

I'd go for the 600D, they're a great camera for the money being so cheap nowadays. The 1000D is seriously dated now.

1000d has a very cheap, shiny plastic shell. Feels horrible in the hand.

I'll cross the 1000d off then. Any other recommendations for a starter slr? Don't want to spend a lot because I'll no doubts get bored or it will barely get used.

It's not up to spec with today's current range but buy a decent fast 30mm lens for example (don't buy the 50 too tight on a crop!) .. you're laughing.

I was given it, but yes you know me - full PPE has to be used at all times just incase my fingers start to melt.

A good camera, probably better than the 450D mentioned above. It depends what system you want to buy into for lenses and things though.

30 is muuuuch nicer.

The 30mm is easier to use on a crop, but the 50mm gives superior IQ imo.

No idea. Go use it in curry's store and see how you get on. Only thing to be careful of with the low end Nikon's is that some of them dont have a motor for autofocus or something stupid so you gotta pick lenses carefully..

Are bridge cameras anygood?

I've only ever had a digital camera but looking to upgrade a little but I also want want something I can simply point and shot. Cheap, easy to use and will return decent pics is what I want.

The bridge cameras will be marginally better than the compacts, although for that budget you could get a mega cheap old DSLR that will get noticeably better photos than a bridge camera could.

I get the impression a DSLR is a big bulky heavy piece of kit, or am I wrong.
