williams vs 182

2 live can i join the mrk1 club as i have a mrk1 172, witch kills 182's too?

No, you have a phase 1 172, not a 'mk1'...:rasp: ;)

Williams are just a half decent old car with dodgy paint, rusty arches and flaky wheels. There no better than a 205 gti..... never mind a 182.

Hehehe.... 11 pages... just like the old days.... lol:D

at the end of the day i think we can all agree the williams is to quote evo mag "the king of hot hatches" and is so much nicer to look at than a 172/182. runs and hides.......................................

Yep Williams and 1.8 16v are welcome.
Jsut a shame there very few attend. There were 2 Mk1's at Oulton last year mine and Hippys race car.

edde.......evo may be quicker round the ring than u..but lets be honest....the willy u have seriously underperforms for the mods...

evo...u say this that n the other, ppl will disagree....only real way to settle this is to get the cars together on track, or strip.
Evo gone a better driven I'm manly enough (just) to admit that him in the Williams vs me in the Cup he would still be quicker.
The car does underperform I think we all know a new bottom end is the key to more power I domn't see why with the mods its got and a good bottom end it wouldn't be one of the quickest. The suspension (or lack off) doesn't help either.
Just wondering though Evogone if both cars had the same engine gearbox and same sized wheels (or least suspension adjusted to take account of the different allosy size) and both used the same compound tyres in the spec they were originally sold in what the difference would be. What I'm saying is is it the engine rarther than anything else been the driving factor in making the Mk2 quicker or is a better suspension (however arguable it is) been the driving factor?
The Williams is getting on though now into classic status (there was talk of it becomming a classic insurance wise I belive) so stock ones are difficult to find.

I always remember the evo article with the old willy against the new mk 2 172.
The 172 did a lap quicker, had mor "G" in a corner,0-60 was quicker and overall won the test. Now people can **** of mags but back in the day they praised the willy in the old form of "performance car" and evo also voted the willy in the top 10 of the decade so theres no favouritism in the mag.The full fat 172 on the day with experienced drivers of 20 yrs+(not bedroom boys still living at mum and dads)proved that the new car was the quickest on the day.
All be it by tenths here and there, but they still proved it.
And again ill still say that the willy is a great car,and its taken this long to be beaten but modified willy's on there 3rd engine and head and cams and airflow and re-map cant be considered the normal.
Maybe in a couple of years there will be a couple of 182's with 200+ bhp to silence the modded willy's that hold so dear the original.

I am amazed this thread even exists, there is no comparison between a willy and a 182, the 182 is just an everyday car, has no distinction or character, holds no status on the road, has no wow factor, and you would not turn your head if one passed you by, (fact). you could choose 10 equally similar cars if you wanted to waste that amount of money.
The Williams is all of the above, a great involving drive, fun, rare, has loads of character, a presence on the road, and i gaurantee it will turn heads, The 182 will never do this.
Its a completely pointless comparison as there is no comparison.
As for the times, i couldn't give a toss which car is 0.01 seconds faster, who cares, theres loads more to driving than that.:clown::clown::clown::clown::clown::clown:

nice one, i will look to try get to some of them then!!

I dont own either car so its funny reading this thread.

All 182 owners seem to favour the 182 and all Williams owners seem to favour...well guess which! lol! :D

Who cares about manifold this, chip that, we are talking STOCK VS STOCK.

Which is faster? By the comments here it seems like the 182, so why is this thread so long?

Not one can deny they are both great cars for their money, but at the end of the day theres always a faster car out there!

Just appreciate and enjoy what you have.

Cya's!

It would appear to me, that there are alot of losers on this forum.
Yeecup, 172/182's are the bestest most fastest cars in the world. Did you not know?

He is a 182 owner so has a right to comment. All the Williams experiences are about full fat 172...not 182's.

I agree with the statements that every pulication support the statement.

Autocar - 20.? for the 100 for the Willy
17.? for the 182

It can only be proved with 2 bog std cars and a camcorder.

Exactly, well put.

Remember everyone, the statement was not which is the more desirable, best to look at, most fun to drive it was that the std 182 is quicker than the Williams. Which it is and publication have proven it.

There is not need for all the agression. One one has ever said that the Williams is a bad car.....

Is this a joke, most of the magazines praise the 182 for its character, as for turning heads, get real its a clio and the only clio that turns heads is the V6

You make it sould like the williams is a supercar

Last edited:
The V6 is still a rare car, as is any limited edition/small run car...which going by production number is also what a williams is.

I agree it not a supercar but by no stretch of the imagination does 1x2 get the same attention. Whether or not this down the fact the williams is 'just an old car' is another matter, but in any case, theres no denying that more people DO look DO stare at it...must be for a reason i'd have thought?

Oh and as for the which is quicker, i'm sure those who've driven both will agree that both cars perform best in different situations...country roads williams rules (as it should do), smooth roads the 1x2's seem better.

Any idiot can do a 0-60 and show whats 'faster' but real world is different and peoples needs are different; therefore in reality is a bit of grey area as to what is actually faster IMO. If some of you quoting 'test track' results think along them lines you'll see what i mean.

Thats what makes me laugh about these arguments....when the twisties are involved the driver is 90% of the speed...a straight line test maybe be boring and something any 'idiot' can do but this is a better test of the car and not down to the driver imo (when you are talking about speed not handling or grip)

But surely 'real life' speed is a combination of handling and power which is what i'm trying to point out.

Don't get wrong, i'm not making excuses or anything but roads have corners...

Indeed you can't...but you can trust the opinions of the members on here who've driven both on the same roads and can (honestly and fairly) critique each cars strength and weaknesses.

Real life speed is always going to be down to the conditions as i pointed our earlier (^^)...whats fast on one road ain't necessarily the fastest on anything type of road...a point agreed on by several people (including myself)

So basically we can`t say which is better then, we can only rely on peoples opinion which obviously differs between different people .....hooray the topic can end! lol :approve: ;)

My mates got the R19 version of the Williams, and it's totally standard, and I mean standard, and it absolutly blows away 182's etc.

Well basically yeah! Anyway, a magazine review is basically an opinion too...

Not here in Dubai,lol...85% of roads are straight and monotous as can be!!! Kinda sucks having a 182 here but the rare moments i'll get to drive it hard through corners will be worth it.

Not totally in the know about the williams but correct me if im wrong, but how does a car with 32 bhp less and 15 bhp per tonne less blow away the 182?

as for which is faster its the 182 as it got a higher top speed

Where on earth do you get you statistics from?, alot of people would struggle to look at a williams or a 182 and tell you its a clio, most people dont know anything about cars

Good point chris,I know a rally driver near me who could embaress most of us in a mk2 escort with 110bhp on the twisties. Its about skill not horsepower.Si i agree with previous posts that someone good like the stig or whatever would be a good judge of the 2 cars. Its easy to sit there and say how fast cars are in your hands whilst your attached to a p.c
