water pump or tentioner fail?

  03 RS clio 172 flameR
got a wurring sqeaking rotational noise and its pissing me off.
cambelt kit only done last year so i take it to renault and they say it will cost me 150 quid for them to find the problem, then if it is the water pump, anouther 500 quid!!! but if its the cambelt then its free! but these guys are grade A c*ck suckers! so i take a visit to the renault specialist i used to work for and he says they are full of bollox! he said for one, 500 quid is insane! and what needs to be done is have the aux belt taken off and then start it up, if the noise has gone its cambelt side and its there problem to fix! if its not then we know its a aux belt tentioner or water pump, but he says it sounds nothing like the water pump but the renault scam artist says it prob is the water pump!

here is the funny part. the 3 hours labour they said it would take to find the problem is bull! so my local renault specialist gives me a print out form auto-data saying how it takes 0.3 hours to take of the aux belt! so at £50 per hour and only 0.3 hours needed that doesnt come to £150. so now i have to take it to renault to tell them they are scum and to take the belt off and start it up, if the noise is gone then they aint doing the work.

i guess the point of this thread was A. to rant, and B. to ask a question...

is it more likly to be a tentioner or water pump, has anyone had one go on a 172?

cheers people

Find out if they replaced the tensioner when the cambelt was done.

You'd be shocked at how many main dealers don't do it!

is this a common problem?

i know it will be longer than 0.3 hours to take of the aux belt but jus to slacken and wak it off, no more than a hour! but 3 hours!!! from the offical dealer garrage!! bull

remove the undertray and grab the lower aux belt idler pulley and try and wobble it

book time to CHANGE the aux belt is 2.2-2.5hrs (they're harder than you think)

waterpump is estimate approx + 1hrs on top (fiddly fucker if the male torx bolt heads round off)

thanks fred great help, but i have already had someone take the belt off and found it was the idler at the bottom, but since the belt has come off and back on the noise has totally gone! bonus! so leaving it a while see if the noise stays gone as it could just have been a bit tight maybe?
