Vibrationy, rattly, engine noise (vid's inside)..., HELP.

  Clio 182
Hey all,

I have done a search and at first I thought it was one of the engine mounts, but after listening again with someone in the car revving it, it certainly sounds as if the noise is coming from the inlet manifoldy area :S :(

Another thing that makes me believe it's not mount related is, give the car the beans and noise goes away, with mounts the noise gets worse doesn't it? Stick to/or around 3k on partial or lift off throttle and the tinny/rattly/vibrationy noise comes back, hmm, can anyone helps??

Below are a couple of vids I took, sorry for the naff quality, taken on phone...

Any helps mucho thanks, I'll take a look again tomorrow and if needs be, will take the upper manifold off and re-tighten it! If that fails, meh :S

Cheers, Graham

Was 'thinking' that, but after searching dephas/zer not too sure as the rattle can be heard from cold and I thoughts the dephasers were only heard once warm, plus on idle. This noise is only heard once revved...?

  172 with k-tec sound
could just be something loose then, but would have thought it was pulley/engine related as it happens when revved.

Definately sounds cam side, id check dephaser pulley / tensioners fairly sharpish myself.

You normally get a chatter/knocking on cold start with dephaser (or atleast mine did when it started to wear)

Ive got this problem, cant hear the vibration noise when ticking over but when u rev it to 2500 - 3500 its fairly bad, rev it to 4000 - 4500 and it dissapears. i pearsonally think its a pulley or tensioner.

  Clio 182
It can't be the tensioner, well it can but, I had that replaced around 8k ago with the full aux belt kit. Also had a full cam kit fitted too a bit before that (found out garage I bought the car didn't change the aux belt/kit). Ruling out further things, there isn't any dribbles of oil, so it can't be lack of oil, plus it had only had fresh stuff whacked in only on 42k for an interval service.

It deffo sounds as if it's coming from the center of the engine, work was flat out today so couldn't get a chance to have another proper listen.

It's due its 48k service in 2.5k time, might book the car in ahead of the service and get the noise looked at.

edit; Ross, yep, EXACTLY the same 'symptoms' as mine! I originally thought it was something to do with the exhaust/heat shield/manifoldy area, but can't see anything obvious! It is driving me mad as to what it is!!

Sounds fukced :S Alternator on the way maybe? Surely the dephaser wouldn't make any noise till reved? i.e on tick over it should sound ok?

  Clio 172mk2
mines doing exact same today, see what its like on cold tomorow , but it only had a new cam kit and aux kit end of jan :(

  Clio Dci
Well i thought i could of been the alternator, so i took the aux belt off at the wkend, started it up, revved it, noise still there! It cant be cam shaft as it more of a virbration/rattle and not a knocking. I'm sure it can only be dephaser or tensioner.

  Clio 182
Ross yea, yea, it is deffo a vibration/rattle! It's no kaknocking or clunking, hoping it's not the dephaser as just had the aux belt kit fitted :(

If it is, can I just get away swapping the belt over for a new one :S

LOL @ Jonny, it's not that bad  :D. Just a wee rattle that goes away when booted, just praying that I'm not doing any further damage :dapprove:

  Clio 172mk2
right started it from cold its fairly quiet then once it warms up its there sounds like its coming from middle of engine n not cambelt side.

  Clio 182
^^ same.

Now I'm a complete engine n00b, but it does sound as if it's the plenum or something underneith...!?! Eeeeeep :dead: :S

I did take the manifolfds off to do DIY inlet matching and porting. THOUGH, these went back on as is and there was no noise following. It's only since the car went in for it's 6monthly interval service and only then the liquids and oil filter were changed that the noise has cropped up hmm...

Could it be that where I did the manifolds maybe the gaskets have slipped a tad, how though, meh, but now I've got a slight metal on metal and hence the vibration?

Or it could just be fubered mounts, and the exhaust manifold is catching somewhere...?

Tbh, I have no idea, may have to back track, though I think I might whack it in to a specialist just to be sure!

well mines just had all belts, timing kit etc all fluids changed and spark plugs. So thought that would be it for a while then this.

Its def metal on metal , guna tke it to garrage tomorow see what they say, just hope its somet cheap , cos last service was 700 or somet daft

  Clio Dci
Intresting to see what it could be and if the problems are all the same thing. Im doing my cam belt in 2 weeks so i will find out then. Moneys on tensioner like. :S

  Clio 172mk2
well had mine looked at today said it sounded exactly like the dephaser pulley , but the noise is coming from other end of engine. So they dont know if that noise is travelling down the cam.

  Clio 172mk2
i hope its somet as simple as that , any ideas on garage time to fit one , wont need any belts etc as they was done 4 weeks ago just checked reciept

  Clio 182
Kk, cool. Cheers biojo :)

I read something Fred posted up not too long ago, that the dephaser doesn't just go bang, or shatters in to a guzzlion pieces. Is it okay for me to leave it until the 48k and just do the whole lot in one go? Or would you lot advise to just get it done now, then carry out the service whenever due? Excuse the n00bishness, but in my defence, both belt kits have been done :D

  Clio 182
Had someone else listen to it and they reckons it's a tensioner, I've had the full aux belt kit replaced so the tensioner was done. He reckons it's the cam tensioner, but whatever it is, I'm starting to lube up for the cost to repair haha!

Going to take the upper engine mount off this afternoon to see if I can see oil leaking from the dephaser. Are there any tell tale signs of a fubered cam/aux tensioner...?

  Clio 172mk2
well my mpg is now averaging 45, and my drivings same as before and i only got 37

Somets def not right

  Clio Dci
Well thats what i think it is. I went to a car parts shop today and they said they could get the tensioners in without having to buy the full cam kit. The tensioners range from £20 up to £90 depending on which one it is.

  Clio 172mk2
well took it today im looking at 150 on the dephaser and 210 labour. and they cant do it till tue then say its only 80% chance itll fix it.

hope i win somet on grandnational lol

  Clio 182
Had my car looked at this morning and well, good news and bad news.

Good news is the noise isn't as bad as I first thought, they've checked the dephaser and they're sure it's not that. It's a combination of rattly heat shield (which I thought I DIY'd, poorly it seems :D) and the baffles in the exhaust have gone.

Bad news is, it's a good enough excuse for me to shell out for a new exhaust system :D

They are just triple checking the dephaser, as I said that's the noise it kinda makes when gone!

  Clio Dci
Well the noise mine was making and had been making for about 2 months now, suddenly disappeared!? Weird!

  Clio 182
It's not the dephaser on mine, thank god. It's all fixed now (heat shield screwed back on and a nut was loose on the fuel rail guard) and the noise has 100% gone away, just got the humming of wheel bearings now :D
