Very Heavy Steering?

  182 BG
Hi Guys,

My 182 seems to have very heavy steering? More so than it feels like it should have on the factory wheels? Furthermore, it doesn't turn smoothly? Its hard to describe, but as you turn the wheel the resistance comes and goes?!

Any ideas?! The power steering fluid looks a bit murky but its full (if possibly a touch too full)...

Thanks,
mctw

It might be the universal joint. I had a similar issue on a Ford years ago, intermittently notchy steering. It's the flexible knuckle in the shaft that goes from the steering wheel.

Just had exactly the same issue with mine and the power steering pump was knackered. Get the car back tomorrow so will let you know if all is well

Out of interest, how did you work out the pump was FUBAR'd?
It started as being heavy steering and a couple of months down the line it started making horrendous noises. Took it for belts, dephaser etc and was the pump was kaput ! Replaced it and no heavy steering or noises :). Didn't realise how late of a reply this was ahaha

Don't worry about it being late, its still an issue I'm having!
It had belts and dephaser done less than 6 months ago.. And Mick @ Diamond didn't notice any issues...

I've learnt to live with it now to be honest!

My PAS pump is on the way out too and I have pretty heavy steering. My pump has progressively gotten louder upon cold starts

Aye well that was the issue with mine and it just got worse and worse, got it replaced and now all is well no noises and lighter steering, feels alot better to drive so worth getting it done imo

Cheers @Tommyd22 .. hopefully it won't need a new pump, haven't noticed any strange noises but I'll get someone to whilst I have my head under the bonnet I think!
And @Bear Head they we're the first thing I checked, 33psi front 30psi rear.. If only life we're that easy! :)

A friend's 172 ph2 has developed a really really heavy steering for some time.
The rack was refurbished, power steering pump replaced with a new one, new fluid.
But it's still very very heavy.
Any ideas?
