Unstable steering at speed

  Volantech CC Panels
My car wonders left and right on the road, almost feeling like the tracking is being knocked out with different cambers of the road. I have replaced inner tie rods, track rod ends and 3 different mechanics have told me my ball joints are fine, my tyre has outer wear although it has been tracked. What could this be? Feels unstable to drive at high speeds and quite unsafe in terms of steering.

What are your toe and camber settings? Is the car lowered as if it's had a big drop this could be bump steer.

What tyres are you running and are they the same on both sides of the axle?

Any play in the wheels, e.g. Worn bearings?

i've now changed the track rod ends, tie rods, steering rack bushes and my ball joints have no play and it still does it. It feels like there is more resistance to turn right than to turn left and when you do a sweeping right hander it clicks out of position and turns more, there is also a knocking noise going over bumps, this is really doing my head in, i cant find the problem!!!

Shock top mounts shot? Broken spring? Leaking steering rack/low PAS fluid? Is the car lowered as if it's been massively dropped it could be bump steer. If you bounce test the car can you track the knocking noise down to one corner?

Have you had the geometry checked? I know you said it's been tracked but a full geo check might be a good idea if if's none of the above. A check is usually free.

how can i tell if top mounts are gone? I've checked springs and they're not broken, not lowered, all standard suspension and yeah it was a 4 wheel hunter alignment

My clio had really vague steering at 60+ mph both my rear shocks had gone swapped them for new ones and all is gd easy to do 30 mins tops, so would check them too.

If the tracking was out before and now it is OK there is a chance that the tyres have worn to the old geometry settings which will make driving the car interesting.

If it were me I would get the car's tracking checked and change the tyres. The bodge would be to switch the tyres front to back to see if the issue goes away, but I personally would not like unevenly worn tyres on the rear of a hot hatch for a long period of time.

turns out one of the ball joints was completely fucked, changed it and it finally drives like a normal car now, so annoying that it was just the ball joint and that nobody had found play in them, but oh well its sorted now!

glad you fixed it joel! I'm having similar issues and the car is just plain dangerous to drive now. putting new wishbones/ball joints on it this weekend, fingers crossed!
