well what people call wastegate chatter, has nothing at all to do with the wastegate. It's actually compressor stall, the throttle is closed and the air rushes back through the turbo and is litterally chopped by the compressor blades

search on google. Loads of info on there about dump valves, wastegates and how it all works.
Wastegates just direct the gases away from the turbine and it regulates boost preasure.
Dump valves get rid on the compressed air, so it stops in entering the engine and hitting the turbine fans when throttle is lifted, If no dump valve installed you will get the chatter as said above.
Turbo spool is just the noise of the compressed air coming through the turbo.

Imo atmospheric dump valves are awful as they are so chavvy ! Most newer cars have a re-circ one fitted as standard, it doesn't make the pttsssshh sound.
The noise the Fifth Gear Esprit made was ace, I don't think that was a blow off or dump valve though.

I've always wanted a 20V turbo but cant get over the looks!
Standard ones look a bit hmm, if you get an LE or a Plus they look better, you can always get the side skirts etc fittted on though

the chatter is not good for turbo blades cos its sumthign like the air coming bakc through the turbo blades. the tttttttssssssssh sound is a dump valve or a blow off valve. some people call it a "BOV chatter" but the blow off valve only meks the tsssh sound. the spooling sound is usually to do with boost..turn it up and it will spool more. btw i wouldnt advise just whakin boost up to like 30psi just to get this sound lol

so spooling noise can be increased by short ram induction / filters etc?
i wouldnt want a dump valve tttssssssss noise.. tooo chavy.. i just like the waste gate cha cha cha noise and turbo spool!!
Yes, and the route of the pipes will depend on how loud it is. you will get the spool up noise and then the turbine chatter or in some cases dump valve noise depending if the turbo has a build in dump valve like for example the Astra Z20let engine out of the GSI.
I had a GSI before my Clio and I fitted a open induction kit, the noise was awesome, loads of spool up sound then the sound of the internal dump valve on the turbo pushing the air back upto the filter.
I do miss it.
