torsion bar lowering

All done, thanks to p carr for his advise on this one.

gonna put up some piccies to show how i did it.

first up, jack up rear end and place on axle stands

remove dust caps to torsion bars

rig up homemade torsion extractor tool as shown

http://www.btinternet.com/~weightspalace/drop/MVC-001S.jpg

install extractor tool and tighten up the bolt only into the torsion bar

then start to unwind the nut untill the socket starts to pull on the torsion bar housing

http://www.btinternet.com/~weightspalace/drop/MVC-002S.jpg

also at this time i made a note of the floor to centre hub dimension

start to unwind the nut fully, which inturn pulls out the torsion bar

http://www.btinternet.com/~weightspalace/drop/MVC-003S.jpg

http://www.btinternet.com/~weightspalace/drop/MVC-004S.jpg

with torsion bars removed both sides, clean and grease the splines

http://www.btinternet.com/~weightspalace/drop/MVC-005S.jpg

place a jack under the rear arm and lift the arm untill the toothed bracket in the centre of the car has rotated just one extra spline than standard. this will take some time to get everything lined up, take your time and keep adjusting the arm up and down if necessary untill the toothed bracket and torsion bar line up.

http://www.btinternet.com/~weightspalace/drop/MVC-007S.jpg

with one torsion bar inserted remeasure the ground to centre hub dimension.

if you have done this correctly it should be 30mm more than before.

http://www.btinternet.com/~weightspalace/drop/MVC-008S.jpg

then measure the the other side without the torsion bar inserted. hopefully again it should be 30mm higher than before. then insert the torsion bar making sure you still have that extra 30mm hieght.

http://www.btinternet.com/~weightspalace/drop/MVC-006S.jpg

make sure both sides are knocked fully home. i used an upturned socket and hammer to do this.

replace dust caps

check everything

and 1 spline rotation is 30 mm ???

what suspention u got on the front ???

and what drop is the front???

also did u replace the rear dampeners ???

MaLicE

man u r cool thanks for the guide.

u r a good man

im buying this week a kit and i was confident i was able to do the front but every 1 said dont touch the rear its soooooo hard to do now you have proved it isnt that hard.

im thinking of getting either

a spax 55mm drop kit with front and rear shocks so i will have to move the rear up untill 2 splines have gone round.

what size wheels u got on yours and what size tyers ???

and do u have a slightly clearer pic of your car finished ???so i can see how much gap u have between ur arches and your wheels ??

MaLicE

thankx m8 sorry to be a pain

MaLice - you take up a lot of space with your typing - if you dont mind me saying!

yeah you will need to turn the bracket(rear arms) 2 splines, thou you will have very little suspension travel. and that will make it very harsh!

r19 16v wheels 15" 195/50

only took those pics really. there isnt a gap between wheel and arch in terms of height anywayz.

Good effort posting that idiots guide. Someone had to.

Your axel stands dont get much use do they?! Mine spends longer on the stands/ramp than the tarmac...

Not sure anout those scissor jacks, hope you didnt get under the car at that point!

d00d nice

thankx for all your help

when i do my car next week u get all the credit for the rear end.

cheers bud

1 last question did u run in to any problems when doing it and doesnt the tortion bar also have a spring with it ?

MaLicE

didnt encounter any problems.

no springs! the turning force being applied to the torsion bar when the arms lift gives the suspension its spring.

one other thing, the 16v/willy naturally from the factory ride lower than all the other model clios. try one spline first and see how it looks.

Where you from weight? Are you pretty handy with mechanicals? I really wish I was.

Why did you take your engine out?

Ah, yes. Empty engine bay. Looks familier.

Your clio looks like my clios twin! Except mins got silver 16s, standard fuel cap, no locks and standard bump strips...

Very nice!

i would most likely say u fuxed

um if u can get a tap u should be able to take it out

or if u got a steady hand u could drill it out

Paul 16v - Halesowen, only had a clio for 4 months and so far had 3 gearboxes. i kid you not!

Colin_s - follow MaLicEs recommendations first. if not, then remove other torsion bar and anti roll bars and push it out from under the car.

thanks for everyones kind comments:)

Its ok i got it out, i wielded the bolt on the end and just screwed it out, any advice on on how to do it again and not snap the fecking screw, it was a high tensile bolt as the first time.

Its ok, im putting it into a performance garage near where i live as i know the owner. He is doing my tortion bar and setting up my coilovers too.
