Top 5 Diesel, 182cup gets a mention haha

Verdict
While the diesel hot hatch is truly upon us the results are mixed. Although the easy punchy performance of modern diesels is impressive, some of the driving magic compared to petrol rivals is undoubtedly lost. The Seat and Peugeot try hardest here but fall short, the Skoda with its all-round ability that seems to work best as an overall proposition.

Renault Clio 182 Cup

The diesel hot hatch is in its infancy and if you’re after a fast, frugal hatchback for long commutes and an occasional blast then these five undoubtedly have some appeal. However, if you want a genuine hot hatch then petrol versions still rule. Think too that the brilliant Renault Clio 182 Cup (above right) costs just £13,800, some £1,700 less than the Seat Cupra here, and you’d need to do an intergalactic mileage to justify the diesel. That and you’ll have much more fun in the Renault.
