too young for a 172?

  Phase One 172
Hi everyone. Ive just become a member as I'm thinking of getting a 172. Currently i drive either my mini 998cc or a Mk4 fiesta (long story). However starting full time work soon and want a proper car, a 172. Ive looked at a few and decided on a Mk2 and would be able to afford it, but the only thing holding me back is insurance. Does anyone seroiusly think i could afford insurance on a 172 (prepared to go on my parents insurance) at 18? Or should i wait till May when im 19? Any help appreciated. Paul

  Renaultsport 172 Cup
I'm 19 paying around 150 a month on my dads. Mines a Cup so a standard 172 won't be that much.

£150 month for a cup. Sounds grand! and £2000 doesnt sound to bad either. I was quoted about £2600 for my fiesta not too long ago, so i'll be happy paying that? what insurance companies would you recommend?

errrrr......directline were cheapest last year and this year, but now I have gone with greenlight, but you need 1 year no claims.

Waiting till your 19 won't drop much off your looking at a load of money make sure you get the policy in your name though to build up our NCB and if you do crash then then insurer won't try and get out paying as some have done when dads have been the registered main driver and the 20 yr old son is the second driver who ends up crashing and insurers start refusing to pay out.
How much your looking at paying is a lot expect £2~3.5k a 172 Cup or full fat won't make any difference realy maybe a few quid either way some insurers rate the full weight more some the cup.
Its a lot of money to pay you'll have to go to the specialist probably as most places will quote you over 10k just to get out ever insuring me. Best try HIC, Tesco can sometimes be good, Liverpoool Victoria then a car magazine like max power and ring all the insurers in the back.

Good luck insuring on your own - I'd say no chance. I was quoted 8 grand!

Try Norwich Union

thanks i'l give them a try. If i do get quotes around £150 i will be definately getting one asap and my plans are as follows:

Mk2 172 in flame red (have to get the car first)
16" 182 cup alloys (in anthracite with 205/45 tyres)
twin 3" exhaust (need to research this one)
and i like my music so my becker sat nav, with a decent set of alpine door speakers and sub/amp (nothing too chav tho!)

wheels and exhaust will depend on insurance though!

TBH honest I'd recommend waiting a little bit longer, to me it just isn't worth paying any more than £1000-ish for insurance. I know it isn't as 'cut and dried' as this, but over a few years you could end up spending £7000 on the car itself, for example, plus 3 lots of £2000-ish on insurance (or even £2000, £1500, £1000), which will come to £11,500, without even accounting for the other running costs....

That's a lot to pay for buying a fast car at a young age...

BUT... if the above doesn't put doubt in your mind, then go for it! You only live once...

Thanks a lot for the comments... if the insurance is reasonable (ish) then i mite as well go for it. I cant really see the point in starting my own NCB yet anyway, i would be paying over £2000 in my crappy fiesta so i think i'll go as a named driver on my 'dads clio' if im paying the same sort of price. But if i do get a 172 i will be doing some advanced driving, as being a young driver im aware im inexperienced etc etc, so a few track days will be in order, and even thinking of getting some police class 1 driving tuition.

You sound pretty switched on for a young wippa-snappa! Best of luck mate, some advanced driving / police trainin sounds like a good idea, both for insurance discount and also for your own ability. :)

getting pass plus first will see a decrease in your policy, the cliko sports are quite high anyway on insurance, group 16 i think, why not get a quote online to get an idea.

  Phase One 172
cool thanks. already have my pass plus, started the day i passed my test, and i was taught by my dad (IAM, skid pan instructor) so he's making me do my IAM asap aswell. Dont like to think of myself as a typical 18 yr old boy racer. To be honest they do my bloody head!

I waited till I was 21 to get the valver and they still took my ring cherry - 24 now and its only recently started to get reasonable!

And 18-19yr old are defiantely not the worst thing on the roads, taxis piss all over em for the c**t factor but the worst by far are the oldies - they are just sooo bad, at least with an 18yr old you won't have to go barreling round a twistie at 65 only to s**t yourself and stomp on the brakes as grandads tootling along at 25mph - idots!

Why not 106 rallye/gti, good cars with slightly lower insurance and are cheaper to buy.

I disagree m8 I have shopped round for quotes on all different cars over the last 12 months, and 106gti/rallyes are deaer to insure than a 172cup

If you ever do happen to find a low qoute get insurance company to send you it in writing a mate of mine was insured on a tt supra at 18 for £1295 due to the insurance company making a c**k up he got the price in writing and they can't go back on it:D

but i peronally wouldn't pay over a grand for insurance...but then again im a girly so will probably never have that problem!

Your lucky your a girl!!!

When I first past my test I paid £1200 insured on a bloody 1.2 8v clio in my mums name and me as a name driver, bearing in mind my mums got more than 15 years no claims, thats with an excess of 800 quid declaring alloys exhaust and spoiler

if you can get insurance on your rents for £150 a month thats good but still a lot. you wont be able to get your own obviously so your gonna lose out on gaining a ncb. look at mine for comparison. 18 with pass plus, x reg 1.4Sport (group 3) with tescos, dont live in a bad area and thats £1440 on me own. pass pluss knocked it down from £2020!

Depends on lots of factors, i had a gti and it cost about £200 less to insure than the 182.

I'd rather catch the bus than pay insurance premiums you guys are talking about, maybe that's just because i'm an old git I don't know.......

If you are the main driver of this car then you are breeching your insurance contract. If you are involved in an accident and the investigator finds out that you are the main driver then expect any claim to be void!

Very dodgy grounds - it's called Insurance fronting.
