timming on my new 172

I would get it checked by a specialist.

The fact that they are marked with tipex will most likely mean they did not slacken off the pulleys (which is regarded as the correct way to do it)

  clio 172
its not tipex there was just 2 small black mark on the casing il contact the person i got the car off and find out who the hell he is and if he as ever done this sort of timming before there are so many cowboys out the its scary lol

your south wales right? get in touch with fred@btm and go see him in bham, its a day out at least... pay him to do a diagnostic on it and go from there.

failing that theres plenty of established mechanics on here that have commented in this thread even... getting 'someone' to look at it and RR it will do jack sh1t.

rolling road will give me a read out of the power bands were it kicks in and the bhp if it down then il now it will be out as if its down on power it cant be right bham is a fare drive for me just doing my head in now as i want to get this sorted and it running fine so just dnt now wot to do il get it checked and then il now

  Lionel Richie
a rolling road (unless its one that does clios alot, ie TDF, rs tuning, k-tec etc) can give incorrect readings, it could say you have 180bhp but in reality you have 160, i wouldn't waste £50 having a power run

i sent my car to have its belts done even when there was no sign of worry. it turned out they were 0ver 90 degree out on a car that seemed fine. the internals were ready to eat themselves

Sorry, but that is bollucks!
Over 90 degrees out would mean more than 5 teeth even on the smallest pulley! It wouldn't even run if it was that far out!

To be fair I've been sat here reading it thinking "how on earth?"

How there wasn't piston/valve contact I have no idea!

insert crank pin, remove cam caps and stick in the horseshoe, if it fits (normally with a slight wiggle) = fine

What does this mean?

Birmingham is not a long drive to get your engine running correctly TBH.

This is one of the problems with the price of 1*2's coming down :(

I pop a small black mark on the depasher pulley inline with the corner of the casing to count the 7 dry rotations after fitting, also brings it back to near TDC. I don't however mark the casing.

so if he does have it looked at and he has somone to insert crank pin. remove cam caps .and stick in the horseshoe and its fine and a specialist says its fine and like he said about 4 times it dont cut out and runs mint and somone didnt use locking tools your still going to say its out

Christ. Didn't realise it would be that simple. So does that mean as long as the tools were used it's impossible to **** it up?

The noob-ness in this thread is strong!

I'm looking at a 182 and belt was done at a local garage in Northampton, it will be going to Fred straight away for a check over!

  clio 172
well i got my horse shoe and crank pin set so going to check the timming in the morning should be fine thou got that felling as it funs to sweat and is a fast 172 :)

  SQ5
LOL, could you please just listen to Fred or any other specialists, it can still be fast no matter how far it is out as long as it still runs!

the man is trying to get is simple answer no need for this can you answer his question dan.( can the timing be done without the locking tools and be done tidy ?????) and if not his car got done 18000 miles ago y havent it broken his engine seams fine no noises no knocking cranks sound fine no metal shavings in his sump so im guessing internally its fine car runs mint pulls well dont cut out if the timming is out and its done 18000 miles i think somthing would have happend buy know or it would be running like a pig ????

All I was saying is all the questions have been answered the fact that
1. It doesn't cut out
2. It "feels" fast
3. It runs "mint"

doesn't mean that the timing is correct. The timing can't be done tidily without the Renault Locking tools, you'd be lucky if it did anyway! I didn't know that metal shavings in the sump meant the timing was out either?

Are you just trying to be awkward or what? Please whoever you are, just take the advise given and get your car checked by somebody who knows what they are dong.
I really don't give a toss if it's right or not,it's not my car.If someone comes on here asking advice on a subject, then doesn't want to follow any given advice thats up to them.
I think people have been very good so far and to a non member aswell.

im sure somone said on this post it can happen if not sorry for the mishap .But if he has it looked at 2moz and they say its fine cause they put the locking tools on. that mean you can do the timing fine without the tools in other words if fred checked it and he said his timming is fine and math172/182 said i had it done by a back street garage who didnt use anytools your still going to say it cant be done

No He would just of been lucky ;) As said above

so the timing can be done right with out the timing locking tools then if a specialist says its fine

no, god you welsh boys are difficult! LOL

timing check - insert locking tools, if they fit = happy days

point being is the owner says it runs fine etc etc etc, our point is the timing can still be off even though it appears to run fine, hence forth we are suggesting to have the timing checked by a pro

simple

sorry for being so awkward so you can get the timing done without the tools if you know what your doing

so in other words math172/182 get it cheaked and let us know. But people saying it aint been done tidy that aint true well it could be so best to get it looked at rather than you going out blowing £400 + on timing when it could off been fine in the first place

lol, this thread is going to implode soon, its just going in circles

I'm also confused as to how buying the tools is a better solution than paying £50 to someone who knows what they are doing :S

Edit: Also, thank f**k you said something about the spelling jonny, was getting on my tits

  Lionel Richie
^don't ask LOL, will be here for months

you can give someone a gun and they can shoot themselves, no one ever asks why though LOL
