Timing out??

  ph2 172
When giving my clio 172 some beans it gets to 5000 rpm and kind of dies! it's like a soft cut rev limiter has cut in?? when really this is when the engine should be springing fully in to life!

anybody experienced this and know what it might be?

Thanks in advance.

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
depends how and when it started really. highly unlikely to be timing if it's been running well before, but if it's had work done (ie cambelt) and that's when it started, then it's more than likely. However, feeling like a limiter sounds like a spark strength problem, could be battery, alternator or coil/leads/plugs

Could the belt not have slipped Dan? Would that cause this to happen? Also what if the dephaser got stuck, would that be a possibility?
