Tappety noise?

  Clio 1.2 - 41k miles
Heya guys im new to the forums and have a quick question about my Clio Liberte II 1.1/2l. Basically it makes a rather loud tappety noise. I will link a video later this evening when I get chance to make it. Firstly is it serious, I have read a lot of things on this forum and others and it seems like there are many issues alike mine. The car has done almost 111,000 miles so I don't expect it to be perfect but it is quite annoying. I will say right now that when I upload the video it will be louder than it is - its in a small garage area, very echoey! Also while we are on the subject any tips on keeping her running smoothly/well at this age?

Just recorded the video - will be up soon. I noticed when sat in the car idling it shudders, quite badly, like you can hear the car making funny noises because its shaking. the exhaust fumes are also not a constant flow they are more of a on/off in time with the engine, when it shudders it feels almost (But not quite as bad) as when your not smooth enough with the clutch. I am genuinely worried about it.. My dad says its fine (lol) but he has been wrong about cars many times when I have been right. Im 17 and I can figure stuff out just by noises and such and im no mechanic but this is odd I can only think its bad.. I cannot take it to a garage as i have not passed my license but I would like to know if it will require fixing by a garage or if its simple..

@Addicted - Plus yeah I am going to do this as soon as I can afford the parts. I only got the car a few weeks ago - I can't even drive yet lol

Firstly, comfirm the timing belt setup is okay and then, as above service it... oil and filter isn't much for the D7F. Secondly, reset the tappet clearances... this needs to be done when the engine is cold.

Hey Mick, how would I check the timing belt and how would I reset the Tappet clearances? Thanks mate!

Timing belt check on these is easy. Jack under sump, remove engine mount and cover bolts - Inspect timing belt for obvious signs of damage (though for the price, around £37 IIRC, you might aswell fit a new kit if you've got this far).

Setting tappets is a real easy DIY job but you will need a set of retro tools known as "feeler gauges"... bring No1 cylinder up to TDC where both valves will either be closed or just rocking. If rocking then No4 tappets can be set. The oppposite will be true for No 4 cylinder. Then just follow similar sequences for cylinders No 2 and 3

Failing that there are guides on the internet or, buy a Haynes manual

I forgot to add:
  • Valve clearance inlet 0.10mm cold,
  • Valve clearance exhaust 0.20mm cold

Okay Mick I will have a look, I have got my Haynes manual on the way so I should be able to manage it. Will the manual help me to do the things you mentioned at all, I know very little about cars but I want to know more! Cheers mate!

Yep, a Haynes for the D7F will show you how to do everything. Trust me though, timing and tappets on this engine is child's play so take your time, read up the process before starting work and providing you understand it and allow yourself time you'll be fine. Also, no specialist tools required either which is a bonus on a Renault ;)

Any problems, we're always here to help so don't be afraid to ask

Cheers mate, my Dad said yeah that's easy and he has the feeler gauges. But he's to lazy to help me... Great! He also said is it a timing belt or chain on my car? Cheers for all the help mate i really appreciate it. Any estimations how long it would take to do it? Thanks again mate!

It's 100% timing belt on this engine and an easy one at that with nice, clear markings.

There will be loads of guides floating around the net to help you setup the valve clearances... failing that, a local garage will proberbly do it for under £25.

Cheers Mick, you have been very helpful :) Shame your not closer lol. I will have to see what the local garages can offer me because I do not trust myself at all.. I also have to wait until I pass my test until I can check.. Hm. Cheers mate!
