Steering rack replacement

Hi,
At low speeds turning the steering wheel makes a bit of a creaking sound, doesn't seem to affect steering.
Thought it might be a drop link but mechanic says its the rack
Worth getting one off eBay from a breaker? Recon one or non Renault new one?

Renault do recon ones, take your old one in part ex..i got one...the 182 had 2 types fitted.. think a sim and other one.. have to look at yours see whats on it ..with the Renault one, you get free track rod ends with it..

wouldn't call it easy to do, but should be easy to check, best done by feel.
ie, put car on lift (four poster obvs), get someone to turn the wheel while feeling the rack near the mount
it manifests as a crack when turning the wheel while stationary

I've had creaking from within the rack before . It turned out to be a dry rack and pinion on the left side of the rack.
I removed the n/s rack gator and lubed rack bed as necessary and all was good .
Worth a try as its cheap.
