Specialist changes Cambelt- How long would you expect dephaser to last......

  Mint 1*2's for sale-
I Viewed a 182 tonight-

Had the cambelt & Aux belts kit done 4k ago in Feb 13...

Dephaser is rattling away- Belts were done by a specialist on here.

I would have thought on inspection that it would have been identified whether it needed changing or not- seems pretty crap to pay the thick end of £550 to then pay another £600 15 months later.....

Was it me? LoL

It's a tricky one as I genuinely don't know the car or the customer. I know I always check them and try to get the customer to budget for the dephaser. It's rare we do them these days without replacing them though.

In fairness though it could have been fine at the time of the belt change.

If the Dephaser wasn't rattling at belt change, not much they can do to predict.

On the other hand they may have suggested changing it and the owner declined as there was no issue at the time.

It's always a risk you take. You've had enough of them to know the score but sometimes you advise in the interest of the vehicle and longevity but the customer thinks you're just trying to up - sell.

Did you buy it?

You can check them for play, but that's about it. I always advise them to be replaced before having them apart. 9/10 they're going anyway. But sometimes the customers just want to get it done and as cheap as possible.

Can anyone enlighten me on a rough price for the full works on a 182 FF, cambelt/dephaser/aux belt/waterpump etc. I want the works done so the car will be as trouble free as possible! Cheers, Gaz.

Circa £600-650 depending on who you are near.

Dan@SJM (somerset) or Fred@BTM (birmingham) are the closest of the big names (yes, I know it's miles). Might be able to find somewhere good in south wales if you look in the regional section?

The two most expensive quotes I've had are both in the south east and by far the cheapest is way up north. Probably uneconomical to travel to anywhere but your nearest though.

Also looking at the full works to be done myself sometime next year. All the jobs were done 18 months ago so id like them done for bait of safety. Only going to do about 2k miles a year (currently one 62k) but id rather be safe than sorry. Do you know anyone up my end that is worth looking at for me?

Ok thanks for the replies guys, I'm always willing to travel as I've been used to it for years always having my cars done by specialists and having no one near where I live! Thanks Dan for the quote I may be in touch very soon, just arranging the funds at the moment.

FFS wish the Vee could get "the works" done for £650ish :(

Realistically why is it so much dearer? Like double the price. Is it just the access and associated labour costs?

Realistically, it's engine out the bottom. I'm sure people like Fred will do them in the car but I'd sooner be safe and drop it out.

£550 for a timing belt and aux belt change with out a dephaser wow!

The dephaser do just go, when we do a belt we always say to the customer it's false economy to not change them, how ever some customers don't have the money to do so, and it's down to them.

no need to gas the aircon, just unbolt the pump and move it out the way!

oh and re the original post, the latest con - we know of a few cars that have come in for just a service, then the owner has put the car for sale saying its had "xyz done" ie photoshop the invoice!!! Always ring the specialist and check what's REALLY been done!

Flipping hell thats bad!!! Forging the receipts and adjusting them.

Take it people have contacted you and you hold no record of doing certain work?

Arseholes!

Yeah its very true and becoming more common. Even I've had a guy from Liverpool call regarding a car I've worked on before asking for duplicates because he didn't believe the clutch had been done... He was right, I'd never seen the car before.

This was a car that sold on eBay of all places!

  Volvo S60 T5
had the same as well, another cambelt done at Rentech , asked for reg and invoice number, no records of it. Sent me a scan of invoice wasn't even one of mine.

That explains why an owner that I contacted about the service history was reluctant to e-mail it.
Bloody hell!
