Renault Sport virgin.

  FF Artic 182
Evening all, my names Josh aka Whetty.

I'm from the midlands and im about on various other French car websites, (F.UK, 106oc, Saxp etc. same user name)
Currently driving my Second 106 quicksilver, first one was diagnosed with rot and was sentenced to the scrappers in the sky by the MoT man, current one is going well with a monsterous 80bhp, which given its very mild work I was quite pleased with.

I am though looking to upgrade, didn't fancy 3 pugs on the trot nor the inbred saxo :rasp:, so here I am.
never owned a Renault and i dont know anyone who has had a 1*2, so it should be fun. The facelift 172 Cup and 182 Trophy have snagged my attention and im torn between the two.

Trophy is gorgeous:eek: but the 172 is far more budget friendly.:approve:

Trophy gets my vote but I'm biased ;) I've had a 172 and it felt like a complete different car.

Oh and welcome to the forum Josh.

Yeah, it can, I know a few who have done it. Not sure it can be done on all 172's but certainly a lot of them can have cruise retrofitted.

Thanks :)

I've had a brief look at them, air con, light washers, abs etc are things I can live without, would be interested to know if the cruise control is able to be moved across to the 172s tho. :)
Some of the later 172s (not Cup) have cruise control. Tbh I have cruise control and hardly use it, there's always at least one person driving like a dick on the motorway so you're never at the same speed for long enough in England!

£10/£12 (I think) well spent for some of the bargains in there!

cool, that your pre face lift in your pic? Are they any different to the post face lift or is it a purely cosmetic difference between the two?

Good! Trophy is in a league of it's own. They also will hold their value a lot better... 172s are sometimes going for less than a grand in good condition now.

With the Trophy though you must factor in the cost of a damper refurb if it hasn't already been done, as well as the usual servicing checks (cambelt, dephaser etc.). If all have been done then you're onto a winner :)

Some inspiration for you:

Yeah, just a 1.2 though! It's mainly a cosmetic change, but the 172's went from cable throttle to drive-by-wire, the 1.2's had 16v instead of my 8, and the DCi was launched. Probably a few other things too.

your 172 looks aggressive there all blacked out! very nice. But the Trophy red is hard to resist, I found the evo magazine review on here the other night that mentioned about the Sachs dampers aren't all that well suited for road life salt grime etc knackers them out, whats the cost of a refurb then? extortionate?
also im correct in thinking that Clio's are springs all round

This is worth a watch: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/renault/clio/65346/renault-clio-182-trophy

Of course the Sachs are suited for road life - they are fitted to a road car after all!

With refurbs it depends where you go. I'd highly recommend Cornering Force, I think it was £190 but BG charge £400+. Cornering Force do a better job IMO!

Most of them will already have been done though, you just need to check if you were to buy one.

1.2 is cool doubt it would be much slower maybe even quiker than my 1.4 :) see nothing like that really happened between 106s everything is 8v unless you have a gti, in which case some wiring n piping etc is a bit different :L

£190 isn't that bad then for a refurb, how often do they need doing or is it just a case of as and when?? anything else to be wary of with these phase 2s?
That video is the exact one that's caused me this dilemma, that scorpion can sounds the dogs danglie's too on the video.

As and when really. Once they've been done they'll see a good few years before they need doing again.

There are plenty of exhaust options for the Clios, I've currently got a Milltek on the Trophy which sounds decent.

You buy a 1.2, you take s**t. You join Cliosport, you take more s**t. Your post count gets a little higher, you take less s**t. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere of Trophy ownership and you've forgotten what s**t even looks like.

Welcome to the layer cake

Welcome to the forums!

Definitely get a Trophy if you can mate. I thought my 182 was a very capable car and I loved it, but when I drove a Trophy it felt on another level tbh.

  FF Artic 182
I think what i shall do is, do as much research into these two as possible and then have a wonder through them all at Trax :L should be a few Trophys there i hope. :)

Aye, not updated it for ages now so it's a bit dead!

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?663332

The Trophy definitely has better smiles per gallon. From first getting in and sitting in the Recaros to taking it around a few corners on some decent roads, the overall experience is a good one. The 172 just felt like a normal Clio with a big engine! Which essentially, it is.

106 quicksilver, currently 1.4 (hopefully 1.6 vtr before trax)
has solid engine mounts, airfilter, vtr inlet, 421 mani, decat and Alten Grp n exhaust.
polybused disk rear beam conversion, will be lowered 50mm alround on spax dampers
half leather gti interior.
some other little bits and pieces, it goes and sounds alright for what it is tho.
