Reety Ho! Audio Q...

  C63 AMG, F430 & 172
Really getting in to my Home audio at the moment, looking at upgrading my amp and maybe speakers soon... also cable?

Need some reccomendations for some audio equiptment, good brands? fair prices?

I also run turntables through it all, as well as pc, and separates.

Ideas anyone?

have around 350 to spend

thanks!

My top tip. Go to Richer sounds. They'll give you great advice, and got some decent kit. Have a look at what they've got and ask them. Then come back home, get on kelkoo or pricerunner and buy the kit for like £100-£200 cheaper! :D

That's what I did with my home cinema kit.

I went to a specialist in London for all my gear, got a NAD Amp NAD CD, Denon Digital Tuner and a set of floor standing Missions and got around £300 knocked off the price.

What are you looking for, do you want a 5.1 amp / dvd/cd seperate, if so have a look at some of the Yamaha Amps, I have one set up under the TV soley for DVD and TV and it is awsome cost about £500 new

will just be for HiFi, so amp to run poss a tuner, cd separate, just a 2 speaker set up (left right)... i use eltax speakers at the mo.

How do you find the Nad gear?

You cannot go wrong with the Cambridge Audio stuff in Richer Sounds IMO. Fantastic kit for the money makes a lot of higher end kit look over priced. Go in there and have a listen. They sound pretty good teamed up with KEF speakers.

My NAD Amp is awsome, the speakers I have are bi wired and are rated at 200w per channel, I can turn the amp volume up well over 1/2 way and the sound is amazing any louder than that and the speakers start to distort.

The CD Player is spot on as well the sound reproduction on it is perfect for the cost of the unit. The NAD Stuff is very basic but well made and really well set up sound wise.

My AMP has a bass and Treble knob and a over ride button to set up up to the factory sound preset, apart from that on the back it has a switch to set up the speaker in a bi wired configuartion and thats your lot. The CD player is like that as well you have random and repeat and thats your lot.

The Cambridge audio stuff if you are on a budget is great value, up until a few months back I was using one of there tuners and a deck and could'nt fault them for the price I paid.

My best bit of advice is to go somewhere that will demo the items for you. Take your CD collection and listen to your fave songs. Also keep in mind what you budget is tell them how much you have and use there knowledge to help you in the choice. By the way budget 10% of the total cost of your system for cables, buy the best you can as the cheap stuff really makes a differnece to the sound. In total I have spent well over £600 in cables for my system over the years.

Oh if you get the chance pop down Tottenham Court Road in London, there are around 30 dedicated hi-fi stores down there, thats where I went for my gear.

They love to haggle as well, get them to write the total price down with all cables and any other bits you need, tell them your going for a Coffee, sit down and look at the price. Go to another store with the list let them tot it all up then go back and start haggling, chances are you will get the cables chucked in for free.

uhhhh Nad stuff is Budget the same as Cambridge Audio, its on a par. If not better than NAD, obviously Hifi is subjective

hummm,

well, I have never had a listen to the cambridge audio, or NAD... my friends dad has £K's worth in his lounge, Linn, Keff and the like... awesome.

The linn amps are amazing!! but a bit too much for my budget really...

At the moment I have Rotel RA-06 Integreated Stereo Amp, Rotel RCD-06, Logitech Squeezebox and pair of B&W 685 Bookshelf speakers and a Pro-Ject Debut turntable

Used to have a Naim Pre, Power, CD and PSU combo with Naim Floorstanders but it was overkill for my living room.

few K's worth of Naim then?

Buy all new? rich ba....d

;)

Rotel? Never heard of it? good?

Nah second hand dude, old Olive Box series. We are talking 8 year old kit but built like a tank. Residuals on them are fantastic as well. I got more than I paid for it. I think in total not including cables and rack I paid about £2500

I like it otherwise I would not have paid money for it ;)

Audio is very subjective what someone finds horrible another loves. Piccy below of my old Naim setup. Just before I bought the supercap for the Cd player. Had it in my dining room, missus hated it being there LOL
