what is the benefit of connecting something eg. xbox 360 to my receiver then to the tv? ie xbox component cable to the receiver then another component from the component out to the tv?

Yup, only worth doing for the switching. Technically you'll actually lose quality...

its only worth it if you run heaps of things over component, xbox 360, Wii, pc and dvd player for me, so its kind of a no brainer. Quality loss is not that bad though. you can't really notice any.
