Project Log - Ph1 Flame Red 172

Yeah, seen a couple before and the black handbrake surround with a grey handbrake lets it down badly. Couple of wee things I need to decide on/buy. The ph1 belt plastics dont match for example, I'll eventually be getting buckets and harnesses but if a cheap set of ph2 or 182 belts came up for sale then I'd take them, the drivers one of the car this came from was a bit past it.

Bored, waiting for my wife to come home so we can have dinner and trying to distract myself from looking at Saabs on gumtree so thought I should update this a little bit.

Not much has been happening as I've had a bit of a health issue, a lot of other things to do and shitey weather, all of which limits playing on the flamer!

So just a couple of pics from the last few months.

Minging in the snow

A sneaky bit of ph2

Today it started like this

and ended up like this

with this going in once its dry

and splashed some of the banks cash on some track day nonsense

Also fitted some new HC and DS2500 (well practically new anyway) and flushed some more superblue fluid through on Tuesday and gave a calipers a quick refresh of hammerite whilst I was at it.

The car is hanging again after only about 200 miles, but then some of that was in the snow to a recent meet in Glasgow!

You've been busy! You putting some new seats in or sticking with standards just now? Spotted my old one in the background above.

Cheers Jamie, aye they're often next to each other!

Gonna have to stick with standards for now, eventually I want some decent spec buckets, recaro or similar.

All of a sudden a lot came off Dave! Still some pretty big chunks but sod it, only grams in it!

Thanks Giles, I try to look after it but its showing its age now and needs some paintwork desperately, it'll happen next year hopefully. Its not getting sold again thats for sure!

Just noticed your fag lighter! Lol!!

Yeah hopefully it'll be worth it in the end, spending my time and wanting to do it properly, try and get as many buttons doing what they should as possible. Got the ph2 loom to use which will help hopefully.

That was unfinished tbh, just made me chuckle. Fag lighter worked well there, genius idea of mine ;)

worth doing, and doing it right. Will make it nice to be in when all that blue coloured crap is gone!

Not many ph1 172 about now, I can't believe how cheap they are now!

Aye it'll be a nice change anyway. TBH the old dash doesnt even bother me, but when Dave was splitting that 02 ph2 that was meant for Robyn but turned out to be dangerous it seemed rude not to have the interior!

Carpet in, for some bizarre reason it looks 2 different colours but with the seats in its not as noticeable. Guess I'll have to clean the front one some more. TBH I just needed to get it out of the spare room!

And I think I might have to keep an eye out for some cheap ph2 seats until I can get my buckets, the mismatch is horrific!

Had a tiny bit of spare time time this afternoon so quickly chucked the handbrake on, every little helps!

The seats are looking more and more out of place everyday!

Got away from work fairly early today and being dry outside and me being bored inside I thought I could make a start. Really just intended to take the old dash out and leave it at that for the day but it went better than expected.

So started like this at about half 2

and quickly became this

And about 5 pm after chatting to my neighbours for a wee while

Its obviously not finished but its dropped below 0 degrees now and I'm at the stage where I need to go to Djw Daves to get some bits from his garage to carry on to the next stage as well as a scrappies for a heater control panel but I'm pleased with the progress.

Not too bad, the alarm wiring was wrapped round the duct on the passenger side but I just, er, popped the duct off with a small lever ;)

I ended up just using the ph1 frame, its only the middle screw behind the heater controls that seems to be different securing wise so I'm sure it'll be alright.

Broke it such a strong word, I simply removed it and it would need slightly more than just putting it back in the right place to secure it ;)

I've got one sat there as well but this way saved me removing all the wiring!

Wow, good effort and well done for not falling asleep ;)

Thanks very much, I do like it that bit too much. Figured out the most expensive thing you can do to a car is to become sentimental about it!

Yeah finally ran out of other bits of the interior to do so kind of had too! Still another good few hours work in it but it'll get there. If u pull it dont have any heater panels tomorrow you're fir it wee sacks ;)

Should add this in here

After starting this months ago I did nothing to it for ages and had various parts hanging off, not attached or just not there at all for far too long. With last weeks trackday looming I figured I should really finish it as I didn't want bits falling off! Didn't take any pics then but have done this morning, its not quite as clean as it was as its a car that gets used and abused daily. Its weird having a radio in it for the first time in 2 years!

Things still to be done - steering column cowling, source a new insert so I can have the dash dimmer and headlight adjuster both fitted, change the silver strips, get a mint set of ph2 seats as the blue now looks pretty damn random! Also need to wire in the new sunvisors.

Washed it on Friday morning and then went and did another 200 miles round some great road in Perthshire so it ended up filthy again!
