I did :p

I've not had any problems with my 172 in the 4 and a bit months I've had it.

Idles better than my 1.2 ever did, starts fine on freezing cold mornings.

im 18, i got quoted for 2thou on my mummy's insurance lol. and that in another month when i have 1 years NCB. Passed my test in may last year

IF im going to get a 172, ill need to buy the b*****d straight off. the insurance is gunna cost me £200 Per month. Im at college and working part time, and im taking in about £620 a month. i dont know if thatll carry on because im not sure if im gunna get as much overtime form now on, so i might be looking at ~£550

its a lot, but id be willing to pay it because i love the car so much. I need ot save first though.

Im paying £490 a year for my 1.2 16 valver as a named drive on ma mums right now. Ive been told that jumping from a 1.2 to a 2.0 is a silly idea but i choose not to take any notice.

I had a Y 1.2 in 2004/5 and recently moved back to a ph1 172, to be honest they're pretty much the same, all Clios can have issues but buy wisely and it shouldn't give you too many troubles, try to overlook the performance aspect when buying and look for the basics.

mate wait it out untill you have a job, dont go on mummys poilcy you will get screwed over if you crash and its actually against the law, have you even thought about running costs?? fuel is more expensive and it uses more, tax is more expensive, goes through tyres quicker, needs more expensive ones, servicing... it all costs up, im on a decent sallary and its costing me a fortune to keep my little 172 on the road!
i know when i 1st joined i prob put a similar post up as i had a 1.2, nearly a year later i had a 172

I had a 1.2 X reg clio RN, electrics were poop. Indicators didn't work properly and it used to shake really bad when going over about 70mph. Recently got a ph2 172 and love it. It's about a million times nicer inside and obviously quicker etc. No problems as yet (touch wood). I'm 19 and my insurance is hefty with no NCB. worth it though

Like i said, ive done the maths. Sod the legality of it all too. How old were you when you got a 172 ? (not havin a go btw) i can afford it, so to speak, seeing as i have no outgoings except "board" to pay which is nowt.
How much is a full service form renault ? tax is roughly £180 apparantly.

...Mother will loose her no claims too if i crash. She wont be too happy i dont think.

Just do it. You only live once, if you have no responsibilities, and you can't see you being tied down to anything in the next couple of years i.e. a house or a kid then it's cool. Just don't wrap it round a tree. Fuel costs are fairly decent for a 2 litre, I average 35mpg. Tax has gone up now, it's about 215/220 for 12 months

Ive asked a lot of people about fuel tbh. 40L tank right ? same as a 1.2 clio. I got over 300 miles toa full tank once, now i get 240 thanks to my induction kit.

what do you get ?

Ive stopped driving like a tit now anyways, last 2 months ive kinda slowed down right to the speed limits. Used to do 70 MPH down 30's. But what the hell for ? petrol wasting, insurance risking, life risking mother fucker. no point.

you could argue why i would want the 172 though. I mean 18 year old gets a car with 140 bhp at the wheels, what do young drivers do ? drive like s***s. fact. youll never change it.

172 has a nice interior, and theyre comfy as hell, 1/2 leather bucket like seats and the leather steering wheel make it all worth while. Its a smart car all in all i think, and when you wanna have fun, you can. Not that ill drive like a wanker anyways.

I'm 26 and paid £450 for insurance with full NCD!

I looked at getting a newer less mileage 1.2 but once I drove the 172 ph1 I've got there is no comparision. I moaned about the insurance and car tax but when sat in it the car is great. Seats are right comfy and I like the interior even though it gets called. TBH it depends if you are a driver or not. I always enjoy driving mine and it just don't compare to driving the 54 redge Vectra that I drive in the week. Just nice to have the comfort and power. I'm getting 34 mpg and don't drive like a tit but it's just nice to once in a while to put your foot down and get the response you are looking for.

Test drive one and you'll defo get one. I nearly got a Megane Coupe till I drove the 172 but my mind was soon made up.

I moved from a VTR, which alot of people do until they get abit older and wiser

Im 22 and earn £20k a year AND im a technician, and mine still cost me a fair few £ a month, even with no labour costs! Expensive fuel, and 35mpg over long runs, plus ive 4 yrs no claims and driving for 5, and i pay £777 insurance!

Mines dead now, so im on the lookout for a new one, ill be back before long, its been two days and i already miss it!! Been looking at other cars, but imo, nothing comes close to the equiptment, comfort and style you get in a 172 for the money you pay

BTW, 'Fronting' is illegal ;)

There was a great post somewhere about getting out of paying huge insurance costs by saying mummy/daddy is the main driver, and the valid reasons why you shouldn't do it!

You say you can afford a 172 - if you can't afford to insure it yourself, you can't afford a 172!

In answer to the topic though, they are great cars, I loved mine. Some people are lucky and never have any problems, but you can generally expect something to go wrong. With mine it needed a whole new cyclinder head, and I also had the knocking suspension and slightly off-centre steering.

Oh, and tax is £205 not £180

  clio 172 cup
I had 1.2 4 years ago and made the jump to a 172 cup, best thing i ever did! i'm paying £550 at the moment but that's because i'm 28 with 7 years no claims, I feel sorry for the younger drivers who are saving up, it's going to hit you hard!

Yeah. Yound drivers are w*****s though. Sorry guys its true. Well, im prolly fronting now. The Valver is registered in my mum's name, because my mum bought it. Shes the second owner. I wanned to drive it because i needed a car to learn in and then drive about in. Mum or Dad HARDLY ever use it now, yet im still on my mum's insurance. Thats illegal yea ? Ive paid my mum for the car now, so its technically mine, but not on paper.

Cambelt and the 72 thou mile service are the worrying thing. Ive got a lot of saving to do first, and i wanna have a few hundered saved back incase i get anyhting going wrong with it.

  Clio 172 mk2
I've had no problams with my 02 172 (touch wood) and it's a very cheap car to run.

Brought outright - no finance
£350 a year to insure
40/45mpg on the motorway

Only problem is the 72k/5yr service coming up:(

as you asked im 20 only just last weekend prob one of the younger RS owners, i pay 1600 on insurance 2 yrs NCB with a 1200 excess.....

i get about 31 mpg and just to put it in perspective i spent £70 on fuel just over the 4 day easter break.

as racing blue pointed out if you cant afford to insure it in your own name, you simply cannot afford one

  Clio 172 mk2
True....insuring in your own name is the way to go.

Still can't believe people pay over a grand for insurance on 172/182s though...when I was in my early twenties I drove a crap, underpowered 1.4 escort lol

i could i guess. think it came to 3500 on my own. i dont wanna pay it though. regardless of what i do. im still gunna get one. eventually lol.

Got quoted as a 19 year old with 1 years NCB, got 1700 with more info req, and 2600 with no more questions asked.

So ill be 19 by the time i can afford one.

Another question - Are sports targets for getting broken into/stolen ? i dont park my car in stupid places right now and i ALLWAYS take the cd player with me when i leave the car parked. But doesnt stop them from taking a quick peek at the glove box does it. And do people get jealous and scratch the f**k out of them too ?

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
yes lol, they are a target for crime, more likely to steal the whole car that just cd players etc, there have been a fair few taken on here

If you've no outgoings and can affrod it whey not do it legally. My understanding is you cannot afford it legally.

PS don't want to be yout if ou have to make a claim wait till the insurnace say nope and refuse to pay for your car damage.

Ive asked a lot of people about fuel tbh. 40L tank right ? same as a 1.2 clio.

50 liter tank there all the same tanks.

Nope there no real risk its not exactly a luxury car is it it looks good and stand out but more impoortanly drive like a idiot and it will get damaged as they do stand out a bit if you cut someone up etc.

full new set of tyres every 1.5yrs.. - £250
fuel - £30/w in comparison to £15 in my previous 1.2
new front break pads every year
youll have to sort out the engine mounts as they are responsible for knocking = 250
cambelt + aux = 500
