Power steering causing a cut out

  172 Ph1/Scooby MY00
Had a moment tonight, thought my belt had snapped again. Lost the power steering and all the lights came up on the dash. Turns out the thing had only cut out though. Phew. Last time it did this it was a worn PAS switch. So I took it to the trading estate and did some turns on full lock. Going anticlockwise on full lock with no throttle it stalls, going the other way it copes - no stalling.

I can't imagine it's the switch again as it is only 12 months old. The original switch lasted eleven years!

Any ideas if it's not the switch: air in the system, knacked steering rack?

The engine is coming out in a few weeks so if it is the steering rack it's not the end of the world and I'll probably replace that anyway (it is 13 years old now).
