Ph2 Gearbox in a Ph1?

  Clio 172 Cup
My gearbox has officially had it and i am looking for a replacement.

basically wondering if i have to get a phase1 gearbox, will a phase2 box fit the car from a 172/cup/182? ive heard these have shorter ratios than the phase 1 to account for the car being heavier? how would putting in a gearbox from ph2 effect the car?

any advise/ thoughts welcomed!

Acceleration will be slightly improved, top speed in each gear will be slightly reduced. The later ph2/182 boxes dont have a speedo sensor built into them which the ph1 172 needs. Theres also a few slight differences such as the oil breather being different. It should still all fit though. I beleive a 172 cup (they have a speedo sensor) gearbox may be ok, but not 100% on that.

cup has a speedo cable, same as the Ph1. you'll need that box or a ph1 box.

Ph2 has a speedo sensor built in, and that's going to be a pain to sort out. (new clocks etc)

no 172 has a cable, they're either ABS controlled or they have an electronic sender unit on the back of the box

172 cup and mk1 172 box's are interchangeable, all others don't have the speedo sensor, mk1 172 box is the best IMO

you could use a williams, 1,9D or kangoo box from the mk1 clios also

^good question, Id be interested to know that although I doubt they are. Does anyone have the weight differences between a 172 cup and 172ph1??
