How long before they make us all have these? Car insurance really is licensed theft. No wonder so many people drive without it. The government needs to nationalise the car insurance industry. Imagine if you had to buy your tax disc off these companies - how much would they charge?

This isn't a new idea, these boxes have been tested for years. The lowest premiums are generally not much lower than a well-shopped quote but the raping-end of the spectrum is beyond ridiculous.

Moral of the story: Kids, if you cant afford it, don't buy it. Run a jalopy until you can be trusted

Third party insurance is mandatory, and is a fixed cost no matter what you drive. If you want fully comp itsa an option. then it works like ours and they asses you accordingly.

Stops people driving powerful/modified cars with no insurance at all.

No idea. I'm not 100% how accurate that is. My mate lived there but when he was explaining it to me we were heavily intoxicated. He is 22 though and while he lived there owned a 440 bhp monaro and an M5.

All thanks to their take on insurance.

Over here, he drives a 1.8 Vectra thanks to our take on car insurance! lol.

In aus the tpo insurance is buiLt into the tax apparently.

A guy at work (whose mother lives out there) said it works out more expensive for most normal people in a normal small engine hatchback though

Yeah they get a sticker on the windscreen which is their tax and insurance. (No mot's over there either for as long as you own the car! You just need one when you buy it. Thats it!)

My cousin is in OZ as well... Going for his citizenship after being backwards and forwards for the past 8 years or so.

Bit of a hoarder and I think he had around 9 cars on his driveway last time I spoke to him, including a handful of 5L+ pick ups, a camper van and an old ford American V8 thing... Think their attitude to car ownership is WAY different to over here

Part of me would love to get it to see how bad i can make it

on a serious note, it surely wont work,

since the only people that will sign up to it are those that drive like grannies,

but as it stands, its high for everyone to even out the cost of the claims a few people make!

so if theyre forced to put down the insurance of the people who are PROVING that theyre good drivers,
then it will put up the prices of the people not on the scheme to even out the costs of the claims?!

It's all fine when when there's a choice, but what happens when they force it on everybody? Don't think they will? Didn't they refuse to insure Escort Cossies back in the day unless they were fitted with a tracker? I'm sure this practice must still go on.

The law states that people can drive at 17. To all intents and purposes, the insurance industry says you can't. That can't be right surely?

Lad at work (knobhead) got done for being overthe limit, whilst eating a pizza in his car outside his house after arguing with his parents after a night out. Gave a load of verbal to the police so they nicked him. Insurance was too expensive thereafter so he didn't bother. Just been done for driving without (I did say he was a knobhead didn't I?) I doubt he'll ever be able to afford insurance again, thus massivly restricting his standard of living.

This is why the government need to get a hold of the car insurance industry; it's out of control.

plus if its forced into effect, im sure itll only be manditory in all new, which will crush the new car industry!!

that or we'll have to put up with 20% higher premiums due to our little Broad blasts!

and then when said trackers are manditory in all new cars, its only a short stop before they can relay that youre speeding and automatically report you for it!!

looks like the end of fun driving on the horizon!

just look on the bright side,
by the time this country gets anything done, we should all be old enough to stomach the insurance and not be targetted by this!!

for example i rang up elephant my current insurer to change car they wanted an extra £700 for 3 months left of the policy.
i then went on the website and got a quote for the same car from the same date for a year cme in at £1300 called them up and becase i still had a policy that id paid anually they just refused to acept the quote and said its going to cost you £700, f**king joke

Would be nice if the box gave you live data and told you how you were currently doing, i.e. how close you were to edge so to speak.
Personally, I think they should still charge high premiums, but if you don't make a claim, you get a % of your premium back at the end of the year. This could also be a selling point for companies (like bank interest rates). Drivers with under a certain amount of experience should be limited to smaller engines sizes as well.

The box is a good idea in principle, but it's only a step away from having our cars limited to the speed limit.
Also wonder if there's going to be an app for your phone that can do much the same thing? then someone like me can go and see how I would do if I had one of these boxes?

It would be a complete waste of time for anybody with an ounce of enthusiasm for driving.

Essentially all it does is measure speed. It doesn't/can't measure general roadcraft, smoothness etc purely just how quickly you accelerate, brake and drive around corners.

I think all it will make people do is concentrate more on how fast they are doing the above instead of concentrating on actually driving.

The tracker box for younger drivers is a good idea. The box needs better Nav/software, but it should be a mandatory thing for drivers between 17-21; it would do a lot of good and bring all our premiums down.

I think every guy on here can admit they drive like idiots at that age - My Dad would have forced me to have one in my car if they were around in the naughties lol.

well, youths would have no choice - drive with box or not at all. but there must be and age cap i.e. 17-21yrs mandatory, 21-25yrs huge discounts for good drivers who choose the box, >25yrs no box needed. If you get to 25yrs old with a good amount of no claims, then as an experienced driver your premiums should plummet shouldn't it?

How exactly does one automotive car insurers company policy have any effect on the value of your house? You sir have been smoking crack.

By point blank refusing cover on someone who lives on a street which spends most of the time on fire they're are protecting not only their business but ensuring they're not increasing the premiums of their other customers by offering cover to those that are a high risk.

So if I/You boot the rs clio to 7500RPM does the box melt down? "Oh I had to overtake a big old slow tractor so I gave it some and theres no power low down on the 197". Can see that excuse coming out a lot etc.. For normal day driving I wouldnt mind it as my insursance isnt cheap however what happens when you want a quick blast and manage to cover a few miles in a few minutes creating 0.7 g's ?

In fairness, if you're under 21, driving an RS, then you're gonna get bummed for insurance whatever you do with a policy.
