Opinion on Price CAT D?

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk1
Hi, not sure if these threads are welcome or not but here goes....

I know of a July 2004, Silver Clio 182. No cup packs. 4 previous owners and 46000 on the clock. No history with it and its registered as being a write off, Cat D i believe.

Car not standard, has 16' Lenso Rs5 alloys, and a prospeed exhaust.

What's it worth? And would you take a risk?

Wouldn't touch it. If going for a cat d I'd want a detailed history, pics of damage before and after, where work was done etc etc

but it is cheap, it would only be used as second car and occasional track car. I havent seen it yet, but assuming it drives ok and looks ok surely there can't be much to go wrong? I've bought and sold a lot of cars privately in the past but never even considered CAT D before. Just looking for some reassurance I suppose, or very strong arguments against.

my mum bought a 07 plate clio campus (I know i know) with 2k on the clock (Gap insurance write off though.) for £4500 about 2 months ago and that was a cat D write off repaired by a garage who specialise in clios and its never missed a beat apart from the gas things that open the boot went which was like £20 for new ones. As long as you can see pictures of before and after damage or have a good look at the car yoruself and its the right price can't see why you shouldn't take the risk but check it thorougly (spelling?) before making a decision imo :)

Not cheap if it's fucked and is going to need major work. If it was a cat c/d with a proper history, no problem. But without history you don't know quality of the work, type of damage. Is it coming up cat d on hpi?

I'd be massively sceptical. Where's the history gone? How do you lose all the history on 3-4yr old car. May have been repaired, but may never of been serviced. Given the mileage, not massively cheap. My 172 is a yr older, similar mileage, paid 5650, prob worth 5300 now. For a track/second car, no way I'd go without cup packs.

Would be an OK track car, wouldn't use it for a road car though. How much is a normal 182 on that mileage?

I'd want to see all the reciepts for the rebuild for a start... Make sure it hasn't just been hashed back together with knackered secondhand bits from here there and everywhere to make a quick buck.

For what you're saving, it's not worth it in my opinion.

people say a lot of things about CAT d mate. Think of it as a way of being able to afford a car you could not otherwise afford. If a little extra saving, or spending more on a good one is an option DO THAT.

I'd advise a viewing with someone who know what they are doing. See what you make of the seller. HPI check it, learn all you can on it. Quiz the owner to see what they know/if they are being honest.

It's not really worth £4k (depending on repair quality) I spose it's probably worth £3-3.5 given the history. Maybe if the repairs are spot on it may be worth £3.7k

Check the tyres to see if they are wearing correctly, study the subframe, really get under it and look with a good torch.

It's not THAT cheap, someone else on here just got a not-cat D RB 182 with cup packs, and apparently in good nick bar a curbed wheel for £4.5k or something.

I turned down a 53 plate Silver DCi 80 Dynamique+ with 24K on the clock for £3000 for the exact same reason. It had been in a Cat D write off and the existing owner (claims) didn't know anything about it and didn't have any details or work carried out on the accident.

I'd want to see details too of any accident history before handing any sort of big readies over tbh.

alot of v6 clios will not sell due to this reason, plus unless the detail of the repairs is superbly documented people will rarely put their money where their mouth is, especially if the saving is shite.
