ok, couple of probs after a drive tonight....

  RacingBlue + IceBurg
when i left earlier, i noticed when i stopped that there was a lot of resistence when turning the wheels when stationary. and made a weird sort of squeeking noise. thought it was down to water getting somewhere it shouldnt (its been belting it down all day here and drove through some big puddles) seemed fine after a while and the noise/resistence stopped.

but on my way home just now, it was as if the power steering had gone. very hard to turn the wheel. also some dash lights came on, STOP, and the picture of the engine that said stop, and also the temp gauge was right at the top. every now and then the battery light would fliker on aswell. when i got home (drove about a mile with it like this) it was over heating, opened the bonnet and the header tank was going mad, bubbling away., the fan was also on.

any ideas what could be wrong? never had any trouble like this before tonight... car is a 02 172.

As above definitely have a look under the bonnet and see if your aux belt is attached still. If it is not on any more, I would not recommend starting the car as they can get caught up in the cambelt.

And if it's mid last year by a decent place see if they give 12 months warranty. Birchdown did when it ok mine there.

they said.....

call the AA! lol. first he said drive it 2 miles from my house, i obvioulsly said i didnt want to start it in case it went into the cambelt. he said oh yeah, then tow it. and the AA should fix it for me. or failing that get it towed to them and they will look at it.

he also said that something must have failed for the belt to jump, as it shouldnt just do this. either the water pump, altenator, power steering. is this the case?
