Oil Leak?!?

  "Navy" N17 TWO
I have 2 engine covers haha standard & carbon and I took the coilpack off mine last time as I sprayed my plenum lol :)

  a thirsty one
as has been said, leave the coil pack on just the front few 10mm bolts which attach the upper and lower inlet together and two at the back. unclip the sensors and i just lifted it up and propped it out of the way.

^ this, i looked round for a small torque wrench that does 14nm but not many of them about and figured i wouldnt ever use it for anything else so, nipped up.

Jesus fella's who paid £500 lol

Mine has been leaking for ages, pissing all over the driveshaft, finally got it sorted today, final price was....wait for it.....£35.

You gotta take the inlets and so on off to get to it, but it just involves taking the cover off, fitting a new gasket, sealing it properly, and then bolting it all back on.

And i would recommend doing your plugs too, i got new leads and plugs for £30 too.

£65, jobs a good un :)

i did my rocker cover this weekend :) rubber gasket 14.58, new ht leads 30 quid .. oh and i got a bargain at halfrauds ! 235pc tool kit in a metal box with 2 draw's n a lid, all for 50 quid, i figured i need some tools :p the hardest part was getting them 6 bolts off the air intake manfold .. lol

any road after reading this i dont envy you 172/82 boys n girls

How you guys got on with the 'cheap' fix on rocker covers??? What exact sealant are people recommending as i've used some crap liquid gaskets in past

Mines suddenly started pissing out, lost about 500ml of oil in 100miles. Belts not due either so want to avoid that route if possible

oh and another quick question from what i can gather on where to put the sealant from what i've read the oil is actually coming up out the bolt holes??? Correct or not?

  a thirsty one
That's a lot of oil, if you do want to try the bolts I used some wynns black gasket about £20 just do one at a time where it looks to be leaking from clean them up and some under the head of the bolt.
To be honest though I would get it to a specialist as sounds like quite a bit of oil loss and more than just a bolt.

Yer tell me about it, no sign of it weeping around the sides of cover, put there is a fair bit collected on bottom part of inlet plenum so is coming from top somewhere. Ill get inlet off and have a look at weekend and do the bolts. Put it this way if bolt fix dosnt fix it probably going to break it for parts

Freds just done mine as i had the same problem.

but mine was in for dephaser and belts anyway thank foook!

Was just from a couple of bolts, trip to halfords for some liquid sealant and a 1/4" ratchet set and half hour under the bonnet = problem solved

Done the same journey i did last night without loosing a drop

wooperty woop woop

I'm having this problem now too it would seem.
Is there any way of telling if sealing the rocker cover bolts will hide any underlying problems (although it may fix the oil loss)

Don't fancy solving one problem to create a bigger one lol

Kept a closer eye on mine over the last fortnight now, checked it last night after topping up about a week ago and all seems well.

Got the inlet off last night for a closer look and a good clean, had some oil around the top of 2 of the plugs near 2 of the rocker cover bolts
but most of the oil seemed to be coming from the oil breather plate.

I have got myself some Wynns Black gasket to seal the rocker cover bolts tomorrow

Is it just a matter of unbolting the breather and lifting it off?
Worth replacing the gasket for the breather too?

Yeah I heard that was thinking silicone too lol
Is it easy to take it off Fred and will the Wynns gasket do the same job? :)

And as above will sealing the rocker bolts "hide" any problems?

If I'd seen this post 20 mins ago I would of got you one as I just put the engine back together.

Didn't touch any of the rocker bolts for now until I find out what the torque settings are.
I just gave it a good clean and took the breather plate off but the gasket is fine - had 1 of the bolts holding the plate down was different from the rest and was sitting loose which was wierd :S

^ That's another reason I haven't touched it yet lol anyone have a diagram with the sequence? :)

All seems fine now as said on the phone was just a bit confuddled by the odd bolt on the breather and the same bolt being the loose one
It came out easier than the rest, and tightened up easier but still the same sizes!
