Newb with a F1 R27 (+ a couple of VW's)

 RS197 R27
Hi All,

Thought I'd sign up here and say hello, I've recently brought my second Renault (I had a 5GTT many years ago) after years of owning VAG stuff (and a Punto Sporting whilst at Uni) and me and the wife decided after much test driving etc that a 197 fitted the bill for what we wanted in a daily car, others in the running had been a Corsa VXR (too "chavvy") a Mk5 Golf GTI (too high mileage and too old for the money) a Mk4 R32 (as previous but more so) a 330ci (too BMW for the wife) and an S3 (there seemed to be a huge gap in vehicles from £6k - £10k).

Our local RS dealer had a couple of 197's in, so we took one out and fell in love, at the time I didn't really know what was special with the R27, but the seats/chassis were the deal clincher, and before we picked it up I did my research and found out what exactly it was.

So here's some pics of the 197 before we picked it up:

I used to work for one of the UK's leading early VW specialists, so I'm obviously into my VAG stuff too, so here's the two current projects:

Firstly, my wifes 2.0 Mk2 GTI, Porsche D90 wheels, Electric Recaro interior, plenty of bodywork tweaks, and weitec suspension, full powerflex kit amongst other things:

Then my project, a Mk1 Cabrio, with a 2.0 16v 9a motor, running ITBs, KMS ECU, 8x15" ET12 fully polished BBS RS's, fully polybushed and braced, Audi TT interior, 280mm G60 brakes and lots of other bits and bobs.

So that's me and the cars, I have a couple of GSXR's too, which I can post pics up, if anyones interested!

My boss is also on here, he's got a Ph2. 172 which is set to become a track toy, so between that, and the 197 I'm sure we'll see some of you about from time to time.

I'm not sure how well Mk3's are recieved on here, but hopefully the other motors will show I'm not just about shiny new things!

Cheers,

James

The Mk1 should be around 200bhp or so when it's done, the head has already been p+p, though VW ports are notoriously big anyway, so bigger valves will make there way in, a set of custom profiled Cat Cams should be going in as well (my mate is the UK distributor for Cat Cams), just in the process of sorting a shorter rad (probably a Corsa one, as they will tuck under the slam panel) and that should give me a nice inlet manifold length.

The inlet mani itself is a cut down Golf/Corrado one, using injector seats from a digifant Mk2 Golf, then I'm using 180bhp VW/Audi 20vT injectors, FPR and fuel rail. Ignition will be using a coil pack from a Mk4 Golf 1.4/1.6 16v motor, again controlled by the KMS ECU, the ITB's themselves are from a Suzuki Hayabusa, 48mm tapering to 45mm at the butterfly, we'll use some small core plugs to block off the original injector ports.

Had a nice custom rocker cover made up for it too, used the "DOHC 16V" cut out the top half of the original inlet fannymould, then had the OE rocker cover smoothed, and the DOHC bit plug welded onto the rocker, the whole lot was then powder coated in crackle black, then diamond cut to add a bit of shine!

Anyway, I've probably bored you enough with VAG stuff now!

Plans for the 197 include, well, nothing really... It's got 3 years warranty, and it gets used daily, it's great as it is, and whilst I'm desparate to lower it and have a play, I've got the VW's for that! Though I'm having thoughts about buying a 172 for myself (the wife usually uses the 197 for work, I use the Shanks Pony) which may get the treatment, we'll see, having just changed jobs, paid my work account off, and had the holiday I'd taken over my earnt allowance subtracted from my wages, I'm nigh on £1k down this month, so nowt's going to be happening soon!

Appreciating the VW love on here though, I'd heard it was all about Turini's and SilverVisions

It was a "no-cost" option on the R27's to have the wing/roof graphics removed, so ours never had them, to be honest it would have been a bit much for me anyway, besides if I ever do want them I'm a signwriter/designer so I can always print out some more ;)

There's a link to my Photobucket account on the first post, it's all public, and there's loads of pictures of all the VW's there, including our old G60 Corrado as well, quite funny the VW's are getting more interest than the Clio on a Clio site :)
