new subs

hi what do people think of the twin 12" subs in a ported box by vibe for 299 does anyone know any better for around this price

Vibe sub packages do sound alright but they overcharge for them. Basically the subs themselves are only worth about £80 each. The rest of the cash is basically box design and a couple of chrome ports.

For £299 you could get a couple of better quality subs in a ported or sealed box and a nice amp to power them. Dont get me wrong. Vibe subs are quite good value for money if you dont want to mess about, but for something a bit different you would be better looking at putting a different package together.

well i will spent 300 pounds on subs and as you sound a bit of an expert what would you suggest(make and size for rap/garage)

cheers

come on someone mush have an idea if 300 is too much for the vibe subs i will spend the same on some better ones what do people suggest cos i want the best sub/subs i can get for 300

If its 2x subs in a box that you need for £300 then you will be looking at something like a pair of Rockford Fosgate HE2s or possibly a couple of JL 12W0s. Another alternative would be a couple of Audiobahn AW1200Qs which are the most powerful of the selection i have picked at 700 watts RMS each. All of those will be better than a VIBE setup.

What amp are you planning on running the subs with. What subs you go for depends on that really due to the different impedances involved.

Vibe boxes are the best IMHO, however their subs are not as hot. Get a vibe box and put a couple of American made subs in it.

Thats not a bad plan but you can design your own box to be just as good as a VIBE one. Theres a guy called EFMAX (you may have heard of him) that does unbelieveable box designs. If you dont go down that route you will have to to find someone that will want to buy a couple of Vibe subs without the box.

What sort of companys will make you a box and how much would you expext to pay for a box to house 2 x 12" subs. I would want it to be made to fit the car perfectly.

Well you can get a set of plans for a box to house 2x12s matched perfectly to the subs TS parameters etc for about £20 from EF MAX. Then you could either get a company like Classic Acoustics to build it for you or to save cash you could take advantage of B&Qs cutting service and get them to cut all the bits of wood to the exact measurements and put it together yourself.

You might be looking at £70 or so for the box but it will sound perfect.

Russ I do know EF MAX and his boxes are awesome.

You can download software from the net that lets you design your own box.

Get some RE stuff! (Resonant Engineering)

I had 2 x 12" SEs in a 5cu.ft ported Box in my Clio boot tuned to about 38Hz and it SLAMMED like REALLY slammed. I was hittin about 148dBs with only 1200Wrms goin to em.

U can pick em up for around £200 each or £200 for 1x 15" SE.

And the RE amp is about £350 for 1500Wrms Sweet!

The RE stuff is indeed very very nice. We sell their products and now have some HC12s and one of the amps in our demo car. The amp (RE35-1D) is now £400 unfortunately as the model has been changed..but it is now strappable for joining 2 amps together. If you can stretch your budget a bit you wont find a better sub than the SE for less then £300.

I disagree with some of the above comments! Vibe subs are very good, and when bought alone the £80-£100 prices are fair, BUT the secret in Vibes loaded enclosures is almost entirely with the box design! this is what they specialise in, nobody does it better, and theyve spent vast amounts of time investing in this area, and always test dozens of box types for every sub combination. Their bandpass boxes in particular are astonishing and their 8" setup hits lows like a 12", the 12"s like a 15", etc. The frequency response from Vibes equipment is always exceptional.

Now other sugestions people made:

I think that buying Vibe subs to put in a different box is ok if your budgets tight, cos youre still getting good value subs without paying for the box, although its nowhere as good as a Vibe in the custom box.

But buying a Vibe enclosure and putting different subs in?!?!?!? Thats frankly mad! The boxes were designed with perfect internal resonance frequencies, cubic volumes and shapes to accomodate the Vibe subs, so using another sub in them would be a bad plan.

All IMHO.

And by the way lets all go buy Sony. ;)

Ive sold a couple of Vibe boxes with other subs in them and they sound soo good with a better sub in it. YOu can get an MTX or Rocky sub for £100 which is far better than the Vibe ones. You have to get the right sub for the box tho. Also Vibe will custom make you a box designed for a different brand of sub.
