New Owner 172 - bit concerned.....

Hello all
Just bought a 172 from a small dealer. 80k 1 owner, some history feels nice and tight. Don't have evidence of recent enough belt etc so plan was to get her to Birchdown for a major service and also to tell me what needs doing to get the car fully freshened up.
However I have noticed since getting home that there seems to be some transmission whirr - not really noticeable when going forwards and backwards in a straight line but very whirry when you've a decent amount of lock on in tighter bends (in overrun) and when manoeuvring at low speed with plenty of lock e.g. 3 point turn.
I'm not that mechanically minded but the reason I think it must be the transmission is it subsides when I dip the clutch.
The dealer (home based, seemed a nice straight forward guy to deal with) has given me a 3 month warranty on engine and gearbox, but want to get it straight back to him rather than hang around.
My hunch (inc searches on previous posts) is that it's going to be expensive and whilst whatever it is in the transmission not failed yet it must be on its way out.
I could take it to get an opinion at Birchdown, or could take it back to him and ask him to sort it.
What do people reckon it is likely to be? What's your experience - am I going to be told it's not failed yet, just age related?
Get a specialist opinion then present him with it? Just take it back and say please sort it?
Really appreciate is - I know this is a terrible introductory post.

Get someone like Birchdown (Andy and steve are great) to look over it.

Sounds obviously clutch related but hard to really talk on the interwebz.

Get them to say in writing the issue and let the dealer know.

Thanks Imprezaworks (I will drop in and see them early next week).
I am thinking if it's a gearbox issue then the dealer should put it right, but if clutch I'm guessing it will come down to me to sort under "wear and tear".
Please can you briefly tell me why it's obviously clutch related?

Yes goes when the clutch is in and don't hear it when accelerating through the same corners. Had the car since midday today.

Sounds like the release bearing. The dealer is only obliged to fix what's gone wrong i.e. The release bearing but I'd ask him if he would fit a clutch whilst he's in there (clutch at your cost)

If the noise goes away when the clutch is dipped then surely its more likley to be a bearing in the box?

When the clutch is dipped the release bearing is engaged and is under pressure against the clutch cover so more likely to make noise. when the clutch is up and his noise is auduble ie driving the gearbox says to me the noise is coming from a bearing inside the box or input shaft

Every release bearing I've had go has made noise with your foot OFF the pedal. Noise tends to go away when the bearing is under pressure.

In fact the one in my mini is noisy now, until I put my foot on the clutch. I'll be leaving it until it gets a lot worse before touching it.

Hi apparently it's the power steering pump being noisy. Will get it replaced when she goes in for the belt service.
