  Focus rs
Hi guys, my names Danny and I'm currently driving a mk1 focus rs(pic below), I'm looking at getting a sport as a daily drive but I want a phase 1 as I love the look of the front end. I'm after some advice on what to look out for when purchasing, also what exhaust systems to stay away from as a lad local to me who I see driving like a cnut majority of the time has got a 172 but its ridiculously loud??

Nice RS, I would stay away from yozza race systems, orca, supersprint off the top of my head they are the louder systems

tbh there's only a few that hold a lower volume.

search on here as there's loads of reviews and videos for you to check on what you want.

If it was me I would start with a low miles std one with a good service history and belts changed and then go through this site
getting good tips with out wasting money there is an ocean of knowledge on here but it up to you

Yeah I would prefer buying a car with good history I just know the phase 1's are a bit thin on the ground now. I'm confident with the spanners so will not have the issue of taking it to a garage everytime I want something done. Is there a "what to look for" thread when buying these cars as I know phase 1's are different to the later 172/182 phase 2's.

Check to see if the belts are due or done. That's the most common thing. It's worth taking it to a specialist when getting these done as there's so many pikey garages that think they know about these engines and actually don't. Where are you based?

Welcome and lovely RS btw :)

I'm based in Oxford. My best mates family own a very well run garage and he owned a 182 which they did the belts on when he owned it so should be ok with them are they that hard to fit? Engine out job?

usually front right side gets taken off and bumper to access it.

It's not so much they break its they don't use the locking tools and timing becomes out so they loose power.

It's up to you mate but I would only take the car to garage that's does clio belts day in and day out there are a lot of bodge gobs garages think they no but don'tdon't

I'm buying my 4th 1*2 in a couple of weeks and I've always looked for these things:

Decent service history with belts as a must
Boot floor straight & unwelded
Suspension irregularities (knackered dampers, cracked springs)
Exhausts blowing/cracked (quite common)
Gearbox is good (They are notchy but shouldn't grind or take much effort to select a gear)
Car doesn't pull to either side on test drive

Personally I'd be looking to buy a car through this forum from a user who's been a member a while. There's so much info on here you'd be daft not to do some reading. There's a full buyers guide if you're a full member too in the guides section.

Nice frs btw :p

ps. The loud 172 is probably decatted!
