New ECU :(

  Renault meggy
Some people may remember me posting a few weeks ago about my car not starting sometimes.
Well I took it to Renault and they tested it and said it will come to £180. I thought that wasn't bad until they rang me the next day to say I need a new ECU and it will cost around £700.

Disgusting :S
Don't see why I should pay over £700 for a fault that I have been told is common with Clio's.

Apparently the ECU has "gone" :S
Thats all they have told me. When I go in I'll find out exactly what the problem was.

This a pre 2004 1.2 16v? It probably wants a new loom rather than the ECU, the anti-tamper cover on it cuts through the loom and causes these problems. It may even be repairable if isn't too bad, and its unfortunately common on the early D4F lump.

Probably they thought the problem was with the ECU in the first place & then when they tried to fix it they fooked it all up.

you don't happen to have a pic of where this is, or a description of where to find it, might need to check mine out.

Haven't i'm afriad, the ECU is mounted on the back of the engine (don't ask!) theres a cover on the top it which is a pig to get off iirc. It cuts into the loom there with the movement of the engine, if its still on there get the cover off and leave it off.

My tamper proof cover had worn the wires down so I left it off but I still got the problems.

Yeh because the wires will still be shorting out/grounding, how bad is it? The loom needs repairing/replacing not the ecu unless its got damaged through the bad loom.

The is the effected area, it happened on mine back in 04 i repair the wires and it was good again.

You can see where the cage has rubbed through the wire causing a short.

Got ya, the casing on mine has been loose for as long as I've had the car, shall have a look at it later on.

Cheers for the pic btw.

Renault have rang today to say on top of the £700 for a new ECU they need to do another diagnostic (£70) because the gearbox is faulty.
I had a new gearbox form Renault a little over 12 months ago which cost me £1000 because it was playing up.
The parts only get a 12 month warrenty!!!

So I could be looking at well over a grand to fix the piece of crap.

All the above are common faults ( even the gearbox ) we do about 3 - 4 ECU kits a month on the D4F clio's. I would contact Renault customer services and have words if i was you

Yup, when i called up the AA the start up my car, he noticed my loom was wearing off..... i acknowledged this and put wiring tape around it, to stop it from rubbing, worked a treat :)

You are not the first person I've heard of having this done. A friend of mine had a leaky MK2 PH2 which killed the ECU, I think he paid more like £1000 to get it fixed!

whereabout in notts are you ? I belive the loom can be repaired / fudged and if your gearbox does require work @ just over 12 months then i'd be ringing customer support as they usually pay the majority of the cost on things just over 12 months old (unless its done 40k in 12 months ;) )

as above, most likely the engine loom, although being a dealer id presume they have already looked at that, they probably keep them in stock

i wouldn't let them carry out the work at that price though, i would take it to a renault specialist even if it means travelling. i personally doubt its the ecu although its not unheard of, sounds like they have said it as an easy answer.
