My MK4 1.8T

I sold my Saab last October as I wanted to save a bit on running costs. As I've been doing quite a lot of work on my house I wanted something cheap that I could use for going to the tip in. I started off with a budget of about a grand. I looked at the usual 1.6 Astra's/Focus's etc until I came across this a couple of miles from my house. Good history and in decent condition, it was slightly over budget but I thought it was worth a risk.

So this is how it has spent most weekends....

I’ve had all the wheels refurbed and she scrubs up fairly well for an old girl.

I’ve covered 7000 miles in it without any real issues, it is a bit dull to drive but it's comfortable and returns 35mpg without really trying. I’m glad I went for it over a Focus/Astra.

Is that 35mpg around town or motorway? I have considered these before... The dullness did worry me a little though.

I'd willing to bet that's mixed. My old 1.8T would easily do 40+ on the motorway.

It is a mix but mainly A/B roads and through town. My 182 returned 32/33 over the same sort of trips and the Saab did 22/23. So the 1.8T is fairly economical.

The Mk4 GTI looks boring as hell (R32 excepted), but the 1.8T engine is definitely the one to go for. Looks tidy.

I miss my old Mk4, although I suspect after years of belting round in a 172,
a Golf would bore the tits off me unless it had big power.

You've got the wrong GTI badge on it. All silver was the 2.0, the 1.8T should have a red "I", don't want people mistaking what engine you've got ;)

I did think about a remap, but at the end of the day it's just a fairly cheap daily.

I thought the same about the GTI badge, that it should have a red "I". But I read somewhere that the badges were added at the dealership before they were sold and not all of them were badged in the same way.

She's for sale now and would make a great daily for someone for not a lot of £££. Advert is in the classifieds on here.

If it was black it would fetch £2500 all day long. They're great sellers.

There are a couple of negatives, I've listed them in the advert. There is also a bit of a gap in the service history. To be honest if someone offered me £1600 I'd take it.

If you didn't live so far away i'd buy it!

I think you've got a problem Dan, you just love buying cars! It would be a good buy for someone at 1600 though, you can't get a much of a car for that sort of money.

What you replacing it with?

I'm going to be cycling to work so we are going to see if we can manage with just one car for 6 months. I've spent quite a lot of money on my house over the last two years, I just want to get it finished now so all my money is going in to that. I'm hoping it will be completed by the end of the year and then I can look at getting another car.

I just sold my mk4 for 1k and struggled at that! :S

Looked well, had a vr6 rear splitter and was lowered a bit on the back. Was quicker in a straight line than my mates 197.
