More puncy bass

  Clio Williams 1, 182,197

Hi ya guys

Im running a 12" JL W3 in a very oversized box !! Now that gives me the most awesome low bass frequencies. Which i love whilst listening to old skool drum and bass and hardcore. Ps its a huge box that runs the full length of the boot.

However when i wanna listen to some nice classic house and such like im missing the puncy bass that music demands to sound nice.

If i put a 10" sub in another box, will i gain that puncy bass back. Or will it sound jumbled ? Or should i use two bass controllers and turn the the JL down/off when listening to the house ?

ALSO IF I FIT THE NEW 10" IN THE SAME BOX WILL THIS SOUND WORSE OR BETTER THAN A SEPERATE BOX FOR IT ? I was gonna divide the box up and put a internall divider in the box so they have their own chambers, so to speak.

THOUGHTS PLEASE !! GOOD OR BAD ILL LISTEN TO ANYTHING !!

THANK YOU

Hi.

Its not normally recommended to put 2 different sized subs in the same car but if they are matched up properly then it can sound good. Your situation is a difficult one and could end up being a bit of a compromise between the 2.

Im assuming your box is ported. If so you could use a port plug which blocks the port to essentially seal the box. Its a bit of a pain having to do it every time you listen to a different type of music but as i said you might have to compromise a bit.

I have known people that have had 2 subs and 2 different types of boxes which they swap over all the time but that is only really for SPL competitors.

I think if you put another sub in the same box you will get a very strange sound indeed as the subs will be doing different things during different fequencies. The only other way round it is to make the box smaller but then you may lose a bit of the low end bass.

The box isnt ported !! And in all fairness when the box was designed it was with the intention of fitting another JL 12" W3.
However I am looking just for a short term answer to the missing punchy bass. As seeing as i bought a cheap amp and 10" sub I was just trying to decide the best way around my teaser.
Whilst i get the money together for something a bit more specialist.

But keep the ideas coming guys !!

Leigh, to get it to sound right then you wouldnt have 2 different subs in the same car never mind the same box. But what is right? It is only what you like that matters. You just need to try it and see what YOU like. However I would say, dont put 2 different sized subs in the same box make sure it is separate compartments.

I have seen a box before that had a mechanical panel that when you pressed a button it opened up to allow the full size of the box for max SPL and low tones but pressing the button again the panel shuts to make a smaller box for SQ. So if you could find some way of making that then you might not need a second sub.

That Crossover you have bough allows you to remotely adjust the frequency of the subs and Q control so that might do the trick for you. (BTW Ill send it tomorrow)

If you have both subs in then I think it would probably be quite good to turn one down when you’re listening to one type of must and then turn the other down of other types of music.

Finally if you have money to spend buy 2 Polk Momo 12" subs. You get low notes and fats base response. Fantastic subs!!! Well I would say that I have 2 of them!!!

leigh

as a rule of thumb if u have one twelve then one ten is not enough it would have to be a pair to gain a nice sound, but your running a w3 already so the only equivalent in a ten would be the 10" version,

but personally i would go for another 12W3 or a bass cube, or a crossover to set up your system to have that punch

Yer i must admit i thought one might not be enough.

I have got a cross over coming courtesy of Colin.

I just wanna keep the low down bass that i already have and just add in the punchy bass that i know that im missing for some types of music.

I will try this 10" Sub when it finally arrives and Ill let you know how i get on !!

I think my best option is just to sell the two subs and amps !! AND GO AHEAD WITH MY ORIGINAL PLAN !! Which is to say hello to a JL W7 and a JL 1000/1 amp and a decent yellow top battery and power cap !!

Itll cost some big dollar but boy will it rock the rafters !!

But until my march/APRIL PAY CHECK ARRIVES Ill try this 10" sub in a separate enclosure !!

leigh,

i like your origianl plan better, i have a 12 w7 and 1000/1 amp and it will rock,

what else are u running speakers wise, and what cross over is colin sending ya.

Im running a set up of

Fronts : Phoenix Gold QX5S COMPONANTS

Rears: Boston 4" mids

Both powered by a PPI 4200 AMP

Sub : JL 12" W3 Powered by a PPI 2400

The cross over is a ?? Cant remember ill check !!

well presonally im not a fan of audio bahn at all, but i wont put it down properly until i have heard it,

but the phoenix gold crossovers are nice bits off kit, however if u want more nass from your W3 add a bass cube, you would not belive the difference in sound and bass it allows u to tune the subs resonate frequecy and cut off,

what components are u running in the front?

I had a similar problem with my JL sub. I sorted mine by sealing the inside joins with filler paste, then lining the sides with sound deadening and finally stuffing the inside with wadding. Ive still got the deep rolling bass, but now I dont get the sort of airy sound with the faster stuff like I used to get.

Personally I always think its worth making sure youve got the installation properly sorted before buying new stuff.

the best thing for your box is very much like u have done rick, personally i fibre glass the inside of the box completely making sure all the edges are well sealed, the best way to test it is to fill the damn thing with water, ( hint if u ever want to measure the size of a box u have made u can fill it with water and measure the amount of water of bean bag filling and measure that)

after u have fibre galssed the edges you should brace the inside of the box and make sure it is completely rigid, u should be able to get your biggest mate to jump up and down on it and it will be fine, next is to either deaden the inside the box to stop a standing wave, and then u can fill the inside with wadding,

so u end up with a water tight elephant proof box, if it dont flex and leak air then u only have yourself to balme or your equipment?

Just thinking if you are running your subs off different amps then you migt be fine. You could used the sub channel of the crossover and the highpass filter on your amp to make a band pass option for your 10 and then use the low pas filter on the other amp for your 12. You should get a good blend of the bass tones then.

Well I must admit i did think running em off individual amps. Wouldnt cause a problem. But as i said in my original post, IM NO EXPERT !!

So i will listen to everybodys ideas and might even try a few of em !!

By the way that email you sent me did make alot of sense !! God I appreciate everybodys advice. Saves me talking to the knob heads in my local place who will just say yer everything will be fine, if you buy this gizmo !! Yer yer, and of cause that will make me a cup of tea as well wont it !!

lol

were not all like that, although i am worried about colin, :D

only joking mate, hows your system going anyway got it all sorted yet?>

Well the subs are just getting broken in very nicely wired up to my home cenema system at the mo. Hopefully get the car back today so can start on the install. Doing a completly new install as my last one was way way to heavy and the box is to big as these momos only require .88cf which is a lot smaller than what ive got at the mo. Ive got some good plans for a band pass box for the both of them but i think ill just stick to my usual 2 sealed efforts.
