Mens Olympic Road Race

  Oil Burner
As i only live 30 mins away from the Box Hill part of Surrey (and encouraged by Ryan) i popped along to watch the 9 lap section of the mens road race yesterday.

Had a really brilliant time, Watching the pain pack (peloton?) come past was amazing, you really don't get a sense of how fast and tightly packed they are on the TV.

I only saw 6 laps as i didn't fancy trying to leave the same time as everyone, but really enjoyed it - great atmosphere and everyone was chatting and friendly. Access was pretty good (i wasnt on boxhill but the other part of the circuit), mainly limited by the number of people and had a few issues with overly officious security people stopping you walking down the course (when there would be no bikes or support vehicles for 10+ mins) but again other spectators were more than happy to tell you the shortcuts to get around.

Pics were a bit of an after thought and with only 6 laps they aren't all as sharp as i might like - never the less, hope you enjoy them!

Superb images! How the cap do you do the panning shots on all the riders...

I'd imagine they're all travelling at pretty much the same speed.

Amazing shots Nick, superb. You've covered so many angles too!

Stunning, makes me wish I hadn't ditched my SLR, shooting fast cyclists with a M43 camera was hit and miss!! Mind you, you are also far more skilled than I ever was!

It is everest if you are me :rasp:

This was from Richmond park:

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

The extra wide pan is definitely your trademark.

I like no3 just that stoooopid motorbike ruins it a bit.

Great set there!

Really like #6 though.

Cheers!

Good shots. Hate watermarks though....

Thanks, Watermarks are what they are i'm afraid.

As luke says, just a slow shutter speed (about 1/25 or so) and pan with the lead riders.

I'd imagine they're all travelling at pretty much the same speed.

Amazing shots Nick, superb. You've covered so many angles too!

Thanks Luke, Yeah i wanted to get some different angles, something that showed a bit of the terrain they are riding on.

Lovely shots Nick. I like how you've made Box Hill look like Everest

Haha cheers, this is actually one of the back sections, about half way around the course.

Haha i kind of wished i could just watch (i always do when i take a camera), but i think i got a good balance, i just wandered as far as i could after each lap and tried to find a new spot.

Those are quality mate. Thought you only shot motorsport haha.

#2 and #6 are my favourites.

Great set!

It's pretty much the same anyway haha, it's got wheels so im happy ;)

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

Cheers! Yeah those bikes are a right pain - but part of the challenge is guess.
The extra wide pan is my 2012 trademark - i think i need to mix it up for 2013!

Master of panning strikes again!

Love the DoF in the front on shots too.

Thanks Dan!

Awesome shots as always Nick!

Cheers mate!
