Well if you shop around on eBay I got a full set of shocks and springs for 30, but new sets can go for a lot more.
If its a performance upgrade though go for coil overs, and you can go lower.

i ran my clio on standard shocks and 60mm springs for two years, had no problems, 40mm is for steers and queers

Yes. Fine.

My old Clio was on 8 year old shocks when I got it, I ran it for a year, then after that two years on 60mm apex springs.

Not one problem.
