Lost Drive Help Please!!!

Hi there,


I recently bought myself a 2002 Clio 172 and on my way home from work today I suddenly lost all drive and rolled to a stop. The problem details are as follows:

Engine still running fine

Can still select gears (not just gear linkage disconnected)

In gear with clutch up the speedo registers a speed even though the wheels aren’t turning.

As the speedo registers a speed I am assuming that is whatever links the driveshafts to the gearbox that have broken? Which side of the gearbox is the clutch on, if it is downstream of the box I guess this could be a clutch failure? Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

clutch is on the engine side of the gear box.

sounds like you do have clutch failure though.

the diff circlip may have popped out passenger side iirc which u can replace really easily, however sometime they can keep on popping out in which case it will need to be welded or new gearbox time

mike your correct you wouldnt get gears if the clutch had gone. the diff circlip has popped out.

See if the clutch is on the engine side of the gearbox then I would of thought it is ok because as I said the car still registers a speed when its in gear, and I would assume that the sensor for that is on the output of the gearbox? Which is obviously still spinning?

The diff clip thing was mentioned on a differnt forum too, but the guy said he wasnt sure if that was only a problem on the phase 1 172's and not on the phase 2's (mine is a phase 2). How easy is it to check for this?

yeah where you based you need to remove the n/s driveshaft and the clip will proberly be in your hand

I am in Uxbridge, which is west london. If it is this circlip, I guess I would want to try and just replace it once and see how I get on as a new gearbox is probably going to set me back a big lump of cash.

How easy is it to replace this circlip, can you do it with the gearbox etc still in the car. Also I read on an older thread that if you removed the driveshaft gator you should be able to see if floating about and therefore I could get it off without removing the driveshaft completely?

hardly any point just refitting the circlip as they just pop out again. The problem will almost definitely be the circlip. Also welding the circlip rarely works as it doesnt weld well to the hardened steel.

the gaitor is on the the drive shaft and cant be removed anyother way unless you dont want the gaitor. i would look for a second hand box cliospares might be a good place to start? and JMS tuning might be a good place for fitting

Were all out at the moment, fully reconditioned units are available from 400. Fully rebuilt with new seals/bearings, cases shotblasted and painted with 12 month warranty.

Hey joseydee I take it you work at cliospares? I see there is a 172 cup currently being broken, is the box in that much different from mine? Could it be possible that these reconditioned boxs have slightly work sirclip grooves already? Or are these re-cut? Any idea how often you get in new boxs?

Yes its my company. We dont list all the cars we break but that one is now sold. We do get them in regularly, the last reconditioned one was sold on saturday, our rebuilder is drawing up a custom design for a plate to replace the circlip like some of the gearboxes already have with a metal plate which will be bolted to the diff. All our work is carried out by a local transmission specialist, they do lots of main dealer work around the area as its too specialist to be done in house anymore.

i had exactly the same problem. i had the clip replaced and a few weeks later it popped out again after i gave it a caning. i went for a new box

i had it too, mine never played up again, and not for the owner after me! replace the circlip and the metal ring it holds in place too

we had one at work where this happened about april time and has not come back guy said it drives fine we replaced metal ring and circlip might be worth a shot

did u drive it hard aswell. i'm not sure if that can cause the problem or not. maybe if u drive it normally it won't happen. both times it happend to me i wiz caning it haha
