Looking for a 172

  MX5, A4 Avant
Hi all,
I'm Andy, I'm in Bedfordshire, and I'm drawn to the 172! There is quite a back story, but I need a fun second car that won't cost a bomb to run (my 1990 MX5 is getting very long in the tooth now), I've owned most car brands but oddly never a Renault, plenty of Peugeots though!

Just a quick "hi" and hopefully I look forward to joining you as a new owner soon! I'm viewing a few over the weekend, not got a lot of money to spend and not after perfection (the car will cover about 2,000 miles a year) but I need something slightly more exciting than my A4 estate or Transporter!

Cheers,
Andy

Don't know if anybody on here knows this vehicle, not the tidiest one about but details to follow.

Looking forward to hopefully being a useful member of the club!

Not a lot really, it'll be the third car in the household, I currently have a very long-in-the-tooth(1990) tricked out MX5 I drive as an occasional car but whilst she's a good'un she's getting a bit too needy. I used to wield spanners for a living (PSA specialist, kinda) so I want something that won't tie me up every weekend with welding and tinkering but something that'll put a bit of a smile on my face whilst not needing constant attention.

Plan is pretty much to get it back to standard, I didn't plan on buying a car this weekend (much to my wife's alarm) but this one came up "around the corner" for sensible money so I thought "why not" and the poor old MX5 is on eBay. This one needs a bit of love and I'm hoping that I'll get some help on here, mechanically it's sorted but it has over-sensitive ABS (any application of service braking, need to get my oscilloscope on it) and a few dings that need attention.

I'm a former tester and auto-electrics (well, and house electrics) nut so hopefully can input something helpful!

Cheers,
Andy

They are great cars mate only had my cup 2 months and love it always had vag but love the clio reminds me of a 80's rally car

Can't be bad, I've had countless and varied cars but I like the feel of this one, seems like good fun. I'll miss the tail-out, lethal-goodness of the MX5 at full-tilt but all good things must end, and I'm not ready to conform yet (I did have a Ford Cougar, but the least said about that the better.)

My previous FWD French hatches were from the PSA stable, 306's and 309s which were probably the best five cars to drive I ever owned (and likewise, I also have two VAGs parked on the driveway a Transporter T5.1 and a B7 A4) and I miss that silly 'chuckability' and Galic shoulder-shrugging you get with a little French hatch.

It has some issues, but I need to give it a proper hard drive tomorrow to find out where exactly I stand with it!

Cheers,
Andy

Congrats mate. Very similar to mine! What are the details? What faults/problems need sorting?

Well the main issue at the moment is the fact the ABS kicks in during most service braking, I need to investigate this further unless anybody has any common issue!

Otherwise it's just body issues (few scuffs and dinks) but they can be solved by man "man who knows about these things."

I've had too many beers this evening otherwise I'd be out now thrashing it, bloody hell this is one capable little car on the right roads!

  MX5, A4 Avant
I'll start a new thread later, but the issues I've found are;

- Think it's snapped an ABS ring as the ABS cuts in on low-speed service braking, then the ABS lamp illuminating and going out again on it's own free will.
- I've never seen such a badly installed induction kit before, comedy pictures to follow;
- Bonnet catch seized yesterday, thankfully a good slather of Plus-Gas followed by working some GP grease in to the catch has fixed it.
- Think I've got a few minor electrical wobbles, the rear fog lamp tell-tale occasionally and faintly flashes when driving;
- Somebody has had a crack at peeling off the SRS sticker from the passenger sunvisor and left an awful mess!
- Radio receptioin is poor, previous owner couldn't work out why, main reason I've found is that the aerial is a broken, floppy mess.

That aside, I paid "pocket-money" for it so I'm quite forgiving of it at the moment, I'm a former spanner weilder but my brother-in-law is a mechanic and is more than happy to work on my cars if I give him a hand in return for pig-sandwiches and beer (rather on his two-poster than on my driveway!) so it'll be going in for a quick checkover Saturday morning.

Also, it has lovely JingJong Ditchfinder XL Pro tyres on it, which will be coming off for some more suitable rubber this weekend!

Can I start a 'project' thread on here?

Yeah start the thread in Clio projects. Handy having a brother who is a mechanic, I'm useless but I've got a very good friend who can do everything including welding so I'm ok. Lol. I'd have massive bills and unroadworthy cars if it wasn't for him!
Get it started asap we need pictures of the induction kit!
Is it on the standard alloy wheels?

Well, and I apologise in advance for these photographs as it's pitch dark down here in Bedfordshire at the moment!

"I know, I'll use this reflective Duck Tape, heat-soak prevention innit, cause' RaceCar Blart!"

"Ah dude, I think this came from somewhere around here....... Yeah, that's right, fits perfect innit!"

One hard "arse dyno" run later....

"Iz jokes mate, too much power, gotta restrain them horses innit, need like proper bolting down like...."

Wow!! That is a proper race car mod right there. Probably makes 42bhp more alone! Still it adds to the fun of doing them up.

haha, looks rough that.
At least you have plans to make it better though. Wont take much to sort it out. Are you changing back to a standard airbox or fitting an IK?

  MX5, A4 Avant
I'll be switching it back to a standard airbox when one comes up for sale, I'm looking to get this car as smart and as standard as possible.

I'll start a project thread!
