Leaking Driveshaft

  Clio 1.8 16v
i got a 1.8 valver mk1 with a leaking driveshaft.
inner end leaking gearbox oil.

i took out the driveshaft this morning and still cant work out where its leaking from.

anybody had this problem?

not sure whether its leaking from the mounting plate or the other end?

best off just to put a new boot on it, im guessing tthe one on it has become old and no longer holds the seal

ok so decided to change the seals ou for new ones and got another problem.
to get the boot off i need to remove the tripod at the end of the shaft.
to do this i removed the circlip... easy enough
now i need to slide the tripod off the spline but its seized!

the bearings rule out hitting it with a hammer.

any suggestions?

i tried sliding it down the other end and removing it that way but the other ends a ball and cage which i cant remove either.

i think im starting to hate renaults

  Clio 1.8 16v
cant find the circlip inside.
i must be going blind or am i just looking in the wrong place.
is it inside as in... behind the ball and cage?

also, how do i remove the bearing on the inner end?

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
the inner one should just come out if you undo the screw in the top.

the outer one has a circlip right inside (you will need to remove all the grease to be able to see it

  Clio 1.8 16v
yes it was caked in grease found it and removed the end.
thanks for that laura

just realised i still need to take the inner end off though as i need to change the bearing. how does the bearing come off? cant see no circlips or screws on that.

and i still need to get that damn tripod off. the circlips removed but i cant pull it off.

from memory there is a screw type fitting in the very end, in the middle of the 3 ball type things

  Clio 1.8 16v
no screw in there.

how wrong would it be to fit the driveshafts off the 1.4rt, these are a fair bit thinner but this driveshaft is doing my head in.
it would be easy enough to do, would it work.
failing that, anyone got a passenger side driveshaft for sale?

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
maybe its different on a valver, as im going off 172 ones,
i recon you could fit a 1.4 one temporeroly as long as the shafts are the same lengh and both CV joints are the same

IM a little confused :| If your leaking gearbox oil it will be a driveshaft oil seal thats broken not the cv boot. CV boot will containt greese for the CV joint only...if thats leaking, you just need to change the boot....

Or is this different on the clios?

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
the end of the inner CV boot is the oil seal for the gear box, it attaches to a metal ring that bolts into the box

weird! Must be a french thing...all the driveshaft seals ive replaced (toyotas) were like this:

i wouldnt suggest putting thinner driveshafts on or it may break. my dad swap a 1.6 rs turbo with a 1.8 engine and didnt change the drive shafts, a piece of shrapnel went through the bonnet:S
