LAST CHANCE AS NO ONE HAS A CLUE PLEASE LOOK AND TRY AND HELP

Hi

I own a 172 Clio Sport Phase 1. When I approach between 50 - 70mph I get a terrible shaking threw the foot well that goes on to shake the entire car. I have had the wheels all balanced and allignment checked and they found a buckled wheel. I changed it for the spare after changing over the tyre as well and having the new wheel re balanced however it still has not cured the problem. Mechanics at Renault just changed me cambelt and they couldnt find a problem nor could any other garage. The car had been spending alot of time sitting around not really running frequently before i bought it. There is no flat spots on any of the tyres either. It is really strange but surely something must be wrong for the shaking to be so intense during these speeds. It drives absolutely fine apart from this.

Shocks worn? check for any oil staining!

Bulge in tyre wall? Run your hand over tyre (inner wall on a Scirroco did similar syptoms forme)

Wishbone?

I don't think I'd personally have paid to have had a cambelt change before sorting out such a big problem like this. Check the tyres carefully and wheels (including wheel alignment). If it is banging on the footwell check the exhaust (the manifold to cat section bolts and springs become seized and also check the exhaust mountings aren't corroded). You can buy a service kit for these parts. Always get two opinions (one garage told me I had two buckled wheels another told me I had one - I had them all refurbished and only one out of five needed to be straightened). And don't bother with Renault - ever - go to a specialist.

One other thought: it isn't modified or anything daft like that is it (e.g. coilovers or wheels that are not designed for that car)?

As above, don't bother with the dealers for AAANNNYYYTTTHHIIINNNNNNNGGG.

Go to any tyre place and ask them to balance all 4 wheels.

If you're on the OZ F1 wheels as standard with the PH1s, they are as soft as treacle when it comes to absorbing potholes etc. High chance that one or more of them are oval.

^^^^ EXACTLY WHAT HE SAID ^^^^

Seen it soo many times. Grab the inner joint and give it an up and down. There will be play in it.

Hi Guys

Okay this is how it is, I have had the car looked at in more detail in the areas you have stated on your posts. However, the problem still is there, I am running parada tyres with my 15" F1's. The guy said it must be the tyres, so I am having them changed this Monday. If this does not work then I am foooooked. What do you lot rate my chances of this being the problem ????????????????????

usually if you can feel it through the steering wheel its the front of the car if you can feel it through the pedals (footwell) its the rear of the car, id guess its a bearing

LOOSING MY MIND

Just had all tyres replaced for Perellis and they problem of shaking is still there. The harder I accellerate the harder the shake. F1 Alloys all balanced again and no problems. I would come to Birmingham but its so far away from me. What the hell else is there to check !!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it's that bad and no one else on earth can help, then take it to Fred. On a trailer if needs be. It can't be that hard to fix, any specialist who knows the Clio inside out will eventually fix it. What muppet convinced you to replace the tyres??

A renault mechanic did mate ! Im not sure how much for the paradas. I am going to have the perelis taken off and money refunded I think, otherwise I will sell them to ya !

LOL I did say take it to someone who knows Clios, but the first criteria is that they know something about cars. Good luck with it, defo take it to a specialist. Renault will gradually replace the entire car until it's fixed. Surprised they haven't yet suggested the petrol tank.

Oh dear this didn't go well.

It'll be the driveshaft, could probably have replaced it and have enough for a pint instead of buying tyre, I can't think why the guy would think it was tyres! How strange.

I've not even seen the car and it doesn't sound like tyres. It's a day trip to Birmingham and back.

hi there,
been reading this post ,if your problem appears under acceleration and feels like the front of the car is moving, i would be going and looking at the driveshafts inner joints, the easiest one to start with would be the o/s shaft. take it out and strip the inner joint off (very straight forward) and feel inside the cup part if you feel any groves in there the shaft will req changing if not will need to remove the n/s driveshaft a feel inside the part which goes inside the gearbox and if there is grooves inside this you can replace this part by removing the circlip and pulling it out of the box, had about 5 cars with this problem, let me know how you get on

regards chris

i seen this before but mainly on megane's as big boost kicks in yo, also done one in a laguna turbo. its been the n/s inner drive shaft coupling this is in the gearbox held in with masive circlip they ant too expensive from renault ether. if its as shakey as u say u will see funny marks on the faces of it
